From a human standpoint, Berger is lost and manipulated by ideology but not abnormal, while Jelly is almost disturbingly kind to the point she's mistaken as the zealous cleric she should be.

The premise is shining this chapter: Jelly's mellow attitude was made for this. Metaphorically or theologically. A conflict-avoidant slime with buffs is more saintly and friendly than most anyone else could be after multiple attempts to kill them and their friends.

I wish more fantasy had personality this clear and thematic. It's like proper fairy tale logic but proud of how absurd it is. Oh goddess... This is a similar approach fantasy as Shrek.

Berger is a pitiful character. But he's not honestly difficult to imagine. When the "good guys" deprive you of your livelihood and constantly betray you, and seem to do evil things without a shred of conscience, why wouldn't you work against them?

yes
"The kindest most benevolent creature I have ever laid eyes on... is a monster! Kill it!"

It has seemed like Jelly's extreme fear of being discovered is just a silly misunderstanding on her part now that she's proven herself, but perhaps that's not the case.
The issue is that it's not "The saint is a slime!" but "A slime took over the saint's corpse!" which comes off a lot worse

Yeah, and Berger's situation isn't "He whistled and the wolves stopped attacking people!" but "He whistled and the wolves turned on their leader and tore it apart!"
That is terrifying. Instant mind control, even capable of forcing those who fall under his spell to kill their allies. It's an evil power. Evil powers don't have to be used for evil, but examples of evil people using them for evil are a lot more memorable than good people using them for good. Berger can raise an entire army of monsters, and once his army is strong enough, he doesn't need to obey anyone else. The people in charge of the kingdom don't want that kind of power in the hands of someone whose loyalty to the kingdom isn't absolutely certain.

Since that guy is a monster tamer, I wonder if he can control Jelly.
I was wondering that as well! In the flashback, he used the little wolves to defeat the leader, rather than just controlling the leader. I take this to mean that his monster control has levels (that can be increased with training?).

He showed that he can now control a dragon, but at this point Jelly is probably an end-game boss, so my guess is that she'll be able to avoid getting a bad end (for now).
