I was a bit defeated for a bit, what with the rise of game prices. Had to shill out 69.99 for Starfield which wasn't the best, and WOW expansions went up by 10 dollars. Looking at Nintendo's crazy hike I was surrendering to the new normal.
Then the Oblivion Remaster sprouts up out of nowhere at 49.99 base, 59.99 deluxe! A bit expensive, but a reasonable price! Furthermore while some companies claim "Oh, prices go up do to tariffs, or inflation" and whatnot, you have plenty of successful games, some indie, some not which don't have 60-80 buck price tags!
For example, Base Oblivion in 2006 was 49.99 USD. Adjusted for inflation, nowadays it'd be 79.20. Do I think Oblivion is worth that price; yeah, it actually gives a ton of content. A walkthrough doing everything could take 80-100 hours if you're taking it slow. that's not even considering re-playability. DESPITE that, the remaster is 10 dollars less at it's most expensive, and shadow dropped and has had a 190k player count at launch.

BIG BRAIN TIME
Is nintendo crazy? What was it, MarioKart for 80 bucks?
Compared to the likes of Mario Kart Wii, which was also another 50 dollar game, which adjusted for inflation would be 77-80 bucks. This... hmm... may be reasonable unless we continue to look at the Mariokart.
Mariokart 8 and it's deluxe version were both 60 bucks, adjusted, nearly 90 dollars nowadays for inflation.
Now a 20 dollar jump is indeed odd, but remember 8 originally released for wii u in 2014, and deluxe released on switch in 2017. At earliest there's an 11 year gap (Home Circuit Mario set coming in between with a supposed 99.99 price tag; I'd consider it a Psuedo-Game more so)
Is this hike shocking then?
Mario Kart wii was 49.99, 8 deluxe was 59.99; adjusted, 78.98, and 94.78 and the years between them (2008-2017) was nine years.
What does this mean? Sadly this isn't unexpected. I'm surprised these games are so expensive! and oddly enough, if anything, the new mario kart world game is below price expectancy, there's been about eight or so years since deluxe (ignoring tour which was free and home circuit) yet in eight years, World is actually cheaper than expected, especially with a 1 year difference between the wait for it since 8 deluxe, and the wait for deluxe from the wii version.
Mario Kart is big for it's britches, always has been, yet is noT at the expected price of 95-100 dollars. Quite the shocker.
Am I saying this is okay? HECK NO! I guess they've gotten away with this because family's play the game sometimes... actually it's a bit mysterious complaints arise now, and not before, or maybe they have, hmm...

I wasn't a nintendo kid, so I don't have the nostalgia for the games and when I finally tried to get into them (with the wii, then the 3ds XL, then the switch 1) I just found them to be lacking. So I sold / traded all my Nintendo stuff and don't intend to purchase them again.

Frankly I don't care, I have a n3ds I bought second hand for ~$100 just before the pandemic and it was, and still is, well worth it. Probably the last handheld with "sovl" out there. Tried my friend's switch and found it lacking in that department, watched the recent announcement and wasn't too impressed, and to be honest I felt a bit disgusted with some of the artificial limitations they set on their loyal fanbase. I wish they could be humbled but they just need one good mario/zelda game to keep them all reeled in.

I've owned every Nintendo console since the N64, and Switch 2 is going to be the first I skip.

The only thing that would make me even consider buying it is a new Paper Mario in the style of TTYD.

Also, in my country the price of the new Mario Kart cracks 4 digits, which makes it look comically absurd to the average buyer.

Anyone hear that Nintendo will brick your system if you mod it? Like, we can't do what we want to the stuff we own? Oh, I'm sorry, I guess it's the stuff THEY own. Silly me, thinking we have rights as consumers.

You'll own nothing and you'll be happy. Now go eat your crickets, peasants!

It's made to fight piracy. But refusing custom firmware and bricking your console if you use one is quite excessive. Stopping you to use multiplayer with a custom firmware to detter cheating, why not. But bricking your console ? What's the point ? The one who use a custom firmware to play pirated ROMs can also use emulation in some way, after all.

Aside from attempting to prevent piracy, Nintendo is also very particular about the way they want players to experience their games. When ACNH became popular, people were complaining about the excessive menus which were "made on purpose to simulate going through mundane long business irl" [citation needed]. And how they don't allow you to roll back updates.

This thread makes me glad the fact that I grew up with PS2 and not any of Nintendo's console. I remember back in the day feeling so missed out because I dunno jack shit about Mario and not owning a 3DS

Looking at some of the stuff that they're trying to pull with the Switch 2 is actually kind of funny because depending on your region, it's not enforceable and you can still sue them. As far as I can tell, in my region, forced arbitration is not allowed and that part of their new EULA will not protect them from any lawsuits.

More reasons to hate Switch 2 and Nintendo. The company has now been essentially bricking consoles that used MIG Switch carts. Even if the roms on them were dumps of someone's own cartridges. If bricked, the consoles online functionality will mostly be disabled. No Eshop, no software updates, no game key card downloads. And, not even all Switch 1 carts will work. I really believe there may end up being a class-action lawsuit over this at one point.

Going to play devils advocate here.

The consoles weren't actually "bricked", they received an online ban. You absolutely have the right to backup and use your legally dumped games, but Nintendo also has the right to ban any console from having access to their online services when they have no way of knowing if the console is using legitimate software or not. It's really a kind of muddy situation where Nintendo isn't actually doing real damage to the console because it still functions, just without access to their online, so they will probably not have to worry about any legal repercussions.

Honestly, it really feels like a FAFO moment for a lot of the people who used the MIG cards on the Switch 2, knowing full well it could lead to some form of reprisal. I would also put some of it on MIG as well, since they have their cards listed as compatible with the Switch 2.

This is pretty much why you let the "tech guys" who have way more money do all of this stuff and screw up their hardware before you do it and mess up your own.

An online ban for MIG cards makes no sense. You throw an online ban for online cheating, online toxicity in a game's chat, or something like that. And even for that, it's stupid : you can just ban someone from a game, but not the other online services. But using it for banning hardware mods and/or piracy is plain dumb.

The console is not using the "legitimate" software ? So what ? How is that Nintendo's problem ? If i want to dual-boot a linux on my Switch, i should be able to. Sure, Nintendo don't have to like piracy, but online ban are not the right answer, it will just makes everything worse. People pirating will be barred to buy digital games, it will just lead to more piracy. If they want to fight piracy, they should is something called physical media, like cartridges or things like that.

If someone buy a piece of hardware like the Switch, it's to use it. You can't suddenly stop me from using it, online features included, for reasons. Compagnies should'nt have that power.

The console is essentially bricked. Yeah it still turns on, and you can play Carts that have the full game on them without software updates, but that's it. I believe the problem that the people at Nintendo have with the MIG Switch and modifications is that they don't want another Hshop happening. But, the thing about the Hshop, is that it allows you to play games that you can no longer get legally because companies don't care about game preservation.

This is one of the situations where consumer rights and the rights of the corpo collide.

While you have the right to backup and use legal copies of your software, the company also has the right to deny you access to their online services if they find you in violation of pretty much the only part of the ToS that's enforceable, even if it falls into a grey area.

Do I think it's bad PR, absolutely, but it's entirely within their rights to do so.

Essentially, all I'm saying is that expecting no consequences when you're doing something you know they're going to come after you for is a bit naive, especially when it comes to Nintendo and how hard they go after piracy. So I think it's best to play it safe and wait for exploits that will avoid an online bad, or a way to update without needing to connect to their servers.
