@Rach1d the xenophobia in this manhwa is really light compared to the shit Japanese Mangas have. The only one that was portrayed badly was that guy leading the jeju raid.
Compare to any Japanese media that includes multiple modern nationalities, the amount of xenophobia against Chinese and Americans is amazing, it's just rarely noticed because they usually stick to pure fantasy or pure Japanese with maybe a single outsider character.

If a Japanese story has an altered history, do you know what the go to turning point choice is for the difference? Japan wins ww2 and shits on America because they screwed something up but Japan does it well because they're so good, screw the details of everything else and the rest of the entire war and European front. They're all irrelevant because they get in the way of showing off how much better Japan is than America.

You know the number one portrayal of Chinese in Japanese stories with politics? People who are arrogant and somehow so stupid they are unable to look even a week into the future for possible issues their plans may have.

The most common view of Japanese in Korean stories I've seen are bloodthirsty malicious backstabbers. They try to look nice on the first meeting but they're always leading you into a trap where they will proceed to kill you... For basically no reason other than their own enjoyment.

This kind of shit happens way more than here.

What keeps solo leveling from being a great story is the absolute lack of closure from any secondary characters (healer girl at the start, sensitive nose girl, the demon girl etc.) and they instead just drop off the face of the story without anything interesting happening to be replaced by the next one, plus the apathy of the main character to any monster threats... Like he ditches the jeju raid and just let's half of the team dies because he couldn't be bothered, THEN decides to go and clean up, plus the shit now with the S gate clearing out Japan, he decides to just ignore it again... That is the shit that keeps this story from being a great one.

Yup this arc is the whole reason why even though I think Solo Leveling is a 'good novel', it will never really became one of the 'great ones' for me. I mean, some dissing or cynicism is fine, I get it, there's frictions between your countries, but like, when your stories is more or less themed apocalypse (or at least something nearing it like this manhwa) wouldn't senselessly bashing or 'crushing' other countries like that greatly diminish humanity's chance as a whole to survive in your story? Seriously, this is why I dislike most of the East Asian novels (whether it's Chinese, Korean, Japanese) that use our world as it's universal background.

Honestly, the only reason I'm not skipping this arc right now is because I want to see if there's something that will be changed from the novel.

@kevin282819 I mean I've read the novel of SL and I consider myself an AVID reader of manga for the most part But I don't recall reading a japenese manga with xenophobia in it as much as SL. Usually from what I remember the foreigner americain cliche in mangas are used as gag and comedy moments .There is nothing too much serious about it. Care to recommand me a manga where the xenophobia that you're talking about happened ?

@Rach1d Agreed, writer really should try to stop their bias to be shown so blatantly. Like, go ahead, diss those countries as much as you want, but implying you're okay with a whole country with all its citizens to be wiped out from the world is definitely not good.

What did he mean by choices? Can anyone explain it to me. I mean his sister and the chairman's problem are unrelated at all.

@Thifa I mean after this arc Go Gun-Hee said something along the lines of
Japan made itself the 2nd largest economy in the world thanks to the korean civil war so we're gonna take the opportunity of this disater that happened to japan where millions died to make ourselves a Giant in economy and overtake them

I mean holy shit If this is not one of the worst lines you can say then I don't know

@zok7404 Your spoiler since you asked
I didn't like that arc, so some parts a bit blurry for me:

In the novel, the dungeon break in Japan happened at the same day Jinwoo went to the double lair, so that's the initial reason why he didn't go. After the raid failed, Japan asked for help to other countries, particularly US since they have 2 Nation Level Hunters, but US refused since there's also an S-rank Gate appearing in their country. Then the whole world criticize Korea for not helping when the Japanese had sent their hunters to help Jeju raid. After being accused like that, Go Gunhee revealed what the Japanese had planned, saying "that is the reason why Korea didn't send their hunters to help Japan, but that there's one hunter from Korea who wanted to help." That hunter is Jinwoo obviously.

So Jinwoo go to Japan, defeat the giants and the Gate's boss.
The boss is a actually one of the Monarch, which gives us more information about dungeons and Monarchs
, get the Giants' shadows
except for the boss
, and became the hero for all of Japan, especially since
later on Jinwoo offered to take care of all the high-ranked gates in Japan for as long as they needed since their hunter system is in shambles because of this incident

(Also, what Rach1d say in one comment about Go Gunhee commenting Korea can became a new economy superpower after Japan fall is true.)

So anyways, in my perspective this whole arc is set up to make a whole country (a country that Korea hated) to become Jinwoo's (Korea's) devoted supporters
