Did not they have, like, an usb charger with a long enough cable? But it was cute so it's OK.
They probably put their phone on the table leaning on something, so the USB port is blocked by the table. They'd still need a long enough USB cable, because where else is the stand going to take power from? A phone stand that takes power directly from the mains would be a lot more expensive and it'd be tethered to a thick and ugly power cable. I don't know of a single phone stand that'd do that.

The better question is why they can't simply use their phone in landscape mode.

So subtle these dorks that they fail to realise they know each other too well for that.

Why would a power cable plugged to a wall socket be much more expensive and thick and ugly than a USB cable? Though most likely you'd have a USB converter/transformer at the wall and have a USB plug for the phone stand, so you have more options.

It wouldn't. Unless they mean connecting it to the breaker box and that would just be ridiculous.
The reason they don't come with a cable is just It's cheaper for manufacturer. It's assumed you already have a USB for it. The assumption is for all home devices now too, since proprietary cables are phased out for single standard, its becoming rarer to see a cable included.

By "home devices" you mean smaller electronics that don't require more than what a USB provides, I assume. And yeah, I see USB connections to anything where that's sufficient, and not only when it also has computer control support.

What are we supposed to do when we does a "Video Chat"?
We're muting our mic and proceed to chatting while our camera on?

It’s the stand that would be more expensive, not the power cord.

As for why the cord has to be thicker than a USB cable, that’s for safety reasons. If you’re plugging it to a 240V 12A power socket, you could transfer up to 2880W of power over that cable. That’s a lot of power and it could melt the cable unless it’s thick enough.

A USB cable can be much thinner by comparison, because the most it can transfer (as per current specifications) is 240W, and the cables that support this much power are already thicker than regular USB cables.

Though most likely you'd have a USB converter/transformer at the wall and have a USB plug for the phone stand, so you have more options.
Yes, and that’s why they’d still need a long enough USB cable, as I stated in the comment you replied to.
