Oh! A Morphling! One of the best card from
Urza's Saga! That's a really great gift from Hajime.
I remember when the set was released, strangely, this card wasn't that popular, even though I thought it was a great card. It took some time (years maybe?) for it to be recognized for what it is. Maybe that's why his friend says
"I feel like it'll come in handy one of these days..."
The combo winter was a really bad moment/great moment for Magic. This deck, Turbo Genius, was so powerful that almost everybody played it. Then, in a different format, there was also the deck High Tide that used some cards from Turbo Genius to do the same combo, generate a lot of mana.
The card High Tide makes all the islands generate one more blue mana until the end of the turn. So the combo was to pile as much High Tide as possible, tap 6 islands to play Time Spiral then untap them (and getting a lot of mana in the process), repeat the process multiple times, then empty your opponent's library by making them draw an insane amount of cards. In the end, a lot of those cards ended up being banned.
Wizards of the Coast was so afraid by what happened back then that the following set,
Mercadian Masques, was plain bad and a lof of cards were really bland and safe (in fact, Mercadian so was mild there was almost no cards from it in the decks used at the world championship; at least,
Squee was in that set).
