Suggestion: R-18 instead of Hentai

It would be a lot clearer if the "hentai" tag was just R-18 instead. For one thing, hentai really only refers to a certain kind of pornographic content (BL, Yuri, Gei, etc are considered different genres and would never be referred to as hentai) so it's already confusing to tag them as such. On top of that, right now the rules state:

1.9 Tag porn (and only porn) as hentai. Ecchi and smut do not count. The primary focus must be on the sex, and genitals must be visible (typical censorship aside).
1.9.1 Oversimplified rule of thumb: if it's mostly porn with some plot, it's probably hentai; if it's mostly plot with some porn, it's probably not.

This brings in a lot of room for interpretation as to whether something is "mostly plot" or "mostly porn" but these interpretations are related to hentai as a genre. On the other hand, the way the site is set up with hentai automatically filtered to be hidden, seems to be treating this as a rating/age restriction. It would be a lot clearer if the tag itself, then, was named like an age restriction (R-18).

@-b It's not an age restriction, it was created as a way to hide our pornographic content for the sake of not being banned in Indonesia and similar countries.

@Plykiya I mean another suggestion along the same lines would be to have the tag called "Adult" or something similar, the point is that "hentai" is a genre and even the rules describe it as a genre (adding confusion), when it seems like it's supposed to act more like a filter for adult/pornographic content.

just a random rant passing by...

The bans in Indonesia are so dumb. They banned Reddit for some reason I'm too lazy to look up so I'm forced to use a free VPN that's so slow when redditting...

If I had to read manga with this slow VPN, I'd go nuts. My family is pretty cheap (for good reasons) so no way they're gonna allow me to pay for NordVPN or something.

Yuri hentai and yaoi hentai does exist 👀 They aren't exclusive terms.

>This brings in a lot of room for interpretation
There's little room for interpretation. If it was published as R-18, it's likely hentai. If there's fully visible genitals and sex but wasn't published as R-18, we'd also mark it hentai.

>have the tag called "Adult" or something similar
What would this tag be used for? Series that have smut?

Upvote.
It's annoying when weebs can't accept that a series isn't hentai when the series itself is accessible without any age restriction.
Hentai should be part of demographics to make a clear line between which is hentai and which isn't.

If there's fully visible genitals and sex but wasn't published as R-18, we'd also mark it hentai.
I'm sure enough there're manga with full shown sex that aren't marked as hentai. And genitals pretty much censored by law in japan which would make lot of hentai with full censor be out of this category.

@DANDAN_THE_DANDAN Try vpn gate. It's P2P so sometime there're no good server though.

Funny story, back in v1, it was called R-18. We switched it to hentai for some reason.

Why do people even bother switching names from hentai to R18 or vice versa though? I thought both are pretty big indicators that mean adult content?

@Pika *fancy accent* Our term of "hentai" is simply too sophisticated for these inferior normies such that we have to descend down to their level. They call it... "R-18" bleh.

@Plykiya I think I've only ever seen "Yuri Hentai" to describe lesbian eromanga aimed at men (as opposed lesbian eromanga aimed at women) and I don't think I can remember ever seeing anything described as "Yaoi Hentai" outside of sites that treat hentai as a blanket term for ero content. I mean, you can look at the Japanese wiki pages for yaoi (https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%82%84%E3%81%8A%E3%81%84) and yuri (https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%99%BE%E5%90%88_(%E3%82%B8%E3%83%A3%E3%83%B3%E3%83%AB)) and neither mention hentai at all because... it's a completely different genre lol. (You can ctrl+f/cmd+f ヘンタイ or 変態)

Sites that sell R-18 doujinshi and stuff always put R-18 material "for women" in a separate site or a separate category since it's a different genre than hentai, ie porn for a male audience. (For example: "Toranoana" online store sells many H comi, but any material that's aimed at women, be it yaoi, yuri, or josei, is on daughter site "Joshibu"). This is a "all hentai is porn but not all porn is hentai" kind of situation. Right now it feels like "hentai" is just a really murky tag.

For consideration: (also wow these first two are trash)
https://mangadex.org/title/35914/nadeshiko-changes This series has a line in its description that says "*PLEASE refrain from changing the tags and category to Hentai." which assumedly means that people have been trying to change the tags/category to hentai. Looking through it... I can see why lol. There are a ton of comments arguing back and forth whether it's hentai or not but if the purpose of the tag is to "hide our pornographic content for the sake of not being banned in Indonesia and similar countries." then I think something like this fits the bill, doesn't it? It's not tagged Hentai.
https://mangadex.org/title/1455/okane-ga-nai This infamous BL series includes sex scenes where you ... can't ... see anything at all. Just like the above, everything below the waist is just not there. It's tagged Hentai.
https://mangadex.org/title/30912/my-girlfriend-s-ex-boyfriend This Yuri manhwa is full color but not particularly explicit at all. Just lots of boobs, like the first link. It's tagged Hentai.

(Interestingly enough, I own R18 doujinshi that's I'd say is less explicit than all of those lol)

@-b Well, if you say it like that, why don't we just use ecchi? Since that's the Japanese way to say the Western hentai.
If people are going to get triggered by the H tag, why don't we just remove the H on the H tag and just make it a red flag? Y'kno red flag, red herring. Just jerk to whatever you like, no need to pay attention to a stupid tag.

@DANDAN_THE_DANDAN
Reminds me of this

@Pika I mean right now the site has "Ecchi" and "Smut" as content tags that are entirely separate from "Hentai" even though they'd all be H-content (erotic), that's why I was suggesting something like "R18" or "Adult"

@-b If we were planning on only using terms the way that the Japanese use them, we would be getting rid of Shounen Ai and Shoujo Ai as well, to be merged with Yaoi and Yuri respectively. Nadeshiko Changes wasn't published as R-18 and there is no visible genitalia, despite the focus on sex. So it's not hentai. Just a ridiculous smut series. Okane Ga Nai is tagged as Hentai because of the completely uncensored assholes, even if the dicks are censored.

Discussions on what constitutes yaoi/yuri/shoujo-ai/shounen-ai crop up repeatedly.

I am of the opinion that yaoi/yuri = explicit (ie, hentai) and shoujo-ai/shounen-ai = implicit (ie, not hentai)

@DANDAN_THE_DANDAN Sumimasen? Omae want to say bokutachi the true blood of nihonjin who calls porn manga as ero manga and tag it into R-18 are inferior of tada no weebs na omae? Omae bucchi korosuzo. (I hope this is how true weeb rant looks like)

It just makes the line kinda blurry and I do think it's better to leave what a content is to its nature rather than trying to assume it by people judgements.

I'm not suggesting to use terms only as they are used in Japan, just that "hentai" is a weird/confusing tag to use since it's completely separate from the similar "ecchi" and "smut" tags that are treated as content descriptors while "hentai" is the only one used as a site-wide filter. It just seems like it would make more sense to use a more straightforward word instead of a genre.

I'm not even suggesting the icon being changed from "H," I'm just talking about the word used when adding new titles/changing your account settings. Does it not make more sense to just say "R18" or "Adult Content" or "Porn"?

So as I understand it, the issue is that a genre term is being overloaded to be used as a content age rating as well. And it works for the most part, but it may not neatly fit in all cases because "hentai" comes with its own set of connotations and expectations, just like any other genre.

The "H" tag is used as an age filter, so why not just be direct about it and use "R18"? For someone new to the animanga scene, it's more clear that way anyway imo.

The idea of a more granular age rating system was brought up previously in this thread: #7169: new filter for softcore. I have a comment there drawing some comparisons with other existing age rating systems.
