It's a fairly typical trope: "NO KILLING EVER!" And as soon as the kill happens, "OMG YOU'RE THE WORST!" Context be damned.

I've noticed this trope to be especially prominent in Japanese media.

Self-defence and murder and different. What defines them is the context and circumstance. But for whatever reason, nobody seems to understand that.
