That's actually a very old trope, often with a christian background (think monks and nuns), but also apparent in other religions. To take an example, it was used in a 70s James Bond movie, "Live and let die", (kind of a crossover Bond/blaxploitation movie with drugs and voodoo) where Roger Moore robbed Jane Seymour of her spiritual powers the fun way.
