Not only is it an island nation but they were in a fucking port city. Sea food should be the standard.

I find that this manga isn't particularly about Japanese food. Sure, there's a bunch of that, but that's expected with Japanese authors. However, there's also other stuff that's glorified to the same extent.

That's in my experience the case for most food manga. If it's primarily about the food it tends to be about all kinds of food. If it's primarily about other stuff that has food chapters, it tend to be Glorious Nippon Gohan.

I can appreciate the fried food (since it's a cooking technique and that fits with the manga theme, and of course, its delicious), pg 25 shows the MC had the opportunity to eat Fantasy Meat™ and didn't!!
