Ok, I'm dropping this. I tried. I really tried. The manga had an interesting concept and a pretty good start.
The characters were somewhat interesting, complex and deep; with background and motivations that were slowly revealed, even if they remained hidden to the MC.
There was also political intrigue, with the threat of war looming in the horizont. And all the mystery about the portal between worlds and the MC's family.
Valetta had a wonderful as a character. Dealing with her feelings of gratitude and admiration that slowly became affection. But also with the feeling of inadequacy and the guilt of "taking advantage" of the MC. But instead of giving uo, she works harder than anyone to better herself, to be able to help the MC instead of just relying on him.

I liked this manga.

But, as many others Japanese light novels and manga, this manga has a serious flaw: the MC. Ugh, why are Japanese MCs so inane. They just let themselves be taken for the ride. They lose any semblance of an own agenda a just do what others tell them. You could substitute them for a mannequin and no one would even notice.
The worst part, however, comes when they are dealing with girls. For a moment, it looked like the MC had grown a backbone; telling the rich brat that he just wasn't interested and also having intense, beautiful moments with Valetta. But alas, it was just a fleeting mirage. Now he lets a 14, FOURTEEN, (or 16, but whatever) years old girl lead him by the nose. Acting all embarrassed and shy before any of her advantages.
There isn't anything more annoying than a character that goes "wawawawa a girl is talking to me and touching me, what do I do!?"

The overused "Japanese products are the best things ever" isn't doing the story any favor either. Shaved ice the tastiest thing ever? Come on! She is just tating the sweet over it. Don't they have anything resembling yogurth to do the same thing with?

@Doramas I’m having the exact same problems with this. Even the suspect suspicious noble brother just introduced seems to not be going anywhere or what about Marie? It’s like the MC thinks oh I can’t mess with the customs here to much, as in the slavery, yet is throwing every modern appliance and weapon he can at them. The possible war seems to have taken a back burner to an ice house which isn’t a great move. The only difference is I don’t know if it’s the Japanese food is what is so good here just modern food, even though it’s almost always the way you said. For instance I don’t think they use sugar and without cooling something frozen and sugary sweet would be amazing to them. I’m pretty sure they mentioned using only fruits or rarely a little honey for sweets. Yet even if it was like that it doesn’t fix all the major issues with this worst to me is pushing Valetta into the background while making her out to be an almost yandere in making weapons.

Given that they allow slavery, I can't help but wonder if maybe the country deserves to be conquered rather than propped up. That kind of selective blindness really is suspect. What even is the MC's motivation for doing any of this? To protect the village by making it the most viable military target in the entire country?

And this is my personal opinion, but I don't see Valetta as a yandere. Jealous sometimes, maybe, but that's perfectly understandable. But the thing about her drive for weapon development is that she's more of a realist than anything else. Both her parents went to war, and only her father came back alive when she was just 11. She experienced first hand the hard life of a post-war time period to the point of nearly dying of starvation, and almost losing her father as well, let alone her entire village's experience during the famine before Kazura came. This was after both sides "lost" the war in a sense sustaining heavy casualties, despite the other side (Valvert) having a much larger and powerful standing army. Chapter 11 was the turning point for her (being almost raped and murdered), when she realized just how vulnerable, not only herself, but also her whole village, and her much-smaller country of Arcadia itself really was. And they're all aware that the armistice will expire in 4 years' time, and if nothing is done, the underdog Arcadia is almost guaranteed to lose when the war starts again. And the war will resume...it's not a matter of if, but when...and the characters are acting accordingly with the assumption that it will resume after 4 years. So while Kazura handles the improvements and problems to daily life of society like agriculture and flood management and whatnot, Valetta has planned on handling the elephant in the room, a matter that seems to be in the far of distance but closer than it may seem. The two of them are handling different matters entirely, but simultaneously.

I forgot to mention that the whole purpose of the ice house is to create a new industry, and generate revenue through taxes...because one of the biggest problems that the territory is facing is the chronic shortage of funds, still suffering the effects of the heavy losses sustained during the last war. Not enough money means not enough resources can go into the military spending budget (i.e. salaries to hire soldiers, cost of standard issue armor and weaponry, horses...etc). Kazura's role is mostly focused on is tackling the territory's internal affairs issues and management from the financial side of things.

A modern equivalent to the ice house's construction would be the state government using public funding to construct and build a casino, stadium, fulfillment warehouse, underground subway, private highway...etc. And the management rights would be left to private organizations or companies. Revenue generated from those public projects would then go to the federal government, who would allocate a portion to military defense. Although since this is set in more primitive time period, each territory would be responsible for it's own standing army's military management, and would be obligated to provide and send a certain number of professional soldiers and commoner conscripts (who are mandated to bring their own standard of equipment for the most part) in the event of a war campaign when war is officially declared by the kingdom.

Zirconia is actually best girl IMO (barely beats Valetta) but that option doesn't really seem feasible.
So instead I'd go for Valetta. Lieze is fine. I like her character but she's just outclassed in these comparisons IMO
