it could be summed up in what lolfacesayshi said but one of the things I found annoying about him in the novel is that he had a tendency to avoid reporting his activities or accomplishments to the guild so they have little to no record about what he's done recently. So, on top of the sudden change, he's actively hiding information about himself from the guild.
