Well, we already knew that the girls were a bit deluded from the reason they gave for switching vanguard when they're the ones who couldn't keep up with him and had asked him to hold back. They've probably grown stronger also, but they don't know he's not just stronger but can use magic. It's not like they've done anything bad besides being cocky and they indeed can't really vouch for his strength because they basically immediately asked him to hold back so they could participate and they didn't have his stamina to keep diving deeper in the dungeon.
I hope it'll be a quick 2 page duel where he blows back the knight, grabs them and they surrender. Then he can get back to hunting treants in the dungeon. No need to really waste time on them, an they'll have a reality check on how strong he actually is.

I don't think he can afford to pretend to be weak, more likely the others will lie and say he didn't get them, which would be an equally boring narrative choice.

welp, they're back, one thing is that this series tries not to go too much into gruesome and keep it at a cute-ish style, battle is very short, and they constantly made it mild, (I mean, he cut off the head of a wanted criminal and just made it a hilarious scene out of it?), anyway, for those who interesting in the event I got a spoiler about the event and overall plot of story as far as I understand
check the raws and demn so mild, let just say the raw pretty much skips battle scene, in the novel it said old main beat them to clearly show his strength
I would say it's something like a bit of 40 year old sage and death march maybe? the world has some kind of 'being' that is higher in this world, similar to administration in 40 year old sage, they made a dungeon or creature to get rid of the world, there are a few more reincarnated people you will meet later on, and old man has been 'guided' by game's quest and event in the world that led him stronger and more companion, and he litterary has kids, multiple wives too lmao, this is similar to death march in aspect of character grow, old man got cheat skill that made him stronger, involve in nation-level event and battle, try to conceal his power but it's become something like open secret lol
