I have been involved in heated debates before, and not just once. I've also reported a troll, but since I was part of the problem (I started the argument) nothing happened in the end, and I understand why, and I agree with the outcome in hindsight.
I've also read some stuff with a toxic/emotional audience (most of us have honestly), I've just almost never interacted with them as I could very much forsee the outcome.
Things just never went that far for me.
If this happened to you, I don't see why it wouldn't have happened to me. Unless your argument was way worse than mine, but that I can't know.
So it feels kinda weird that it didn't happen to me, and I'm basically saying as bakedbanban, this shouldn't be something very common.
I would suggest you to report your problem to the mods with a detailed explanation if you'd like to settle your problem.
Haha, at that time I was also blocked with that dude because I stupidly let him bait me and wrote a series of hot comments in response. Probably the first time I was blocked and I was even scared because it was the first time I encountered it. I won't lie, some of the blame for this also lies with me, because I often ignore "don't feed the trolls" or take people too seriously who clearly don't deserve it.
But sometimes it really is too easy and quickly becomes uncontrollable, especially when it comes to shipping or politics. For example, I once left an "ironic" comment after a big shipping dispute over interpretations of one chapter, without directly participating in this discussion so as not to create a necropost (I read this chapter and learned about its discussion a year or a year and a half after the fact). And a couple of months later I saw how some newly created account literally tries to blame me for this discussion and clearly wants to make it personal and long. Probably because my comment was the very last one and he decided to attack me as a metaphorical "anti-shipper".
And I also still remember the story with the SSSS Gridman anthologies, where some dude on an imageboard was obsessed with the conspiracy theory that everyone who didn't ship Rikka with Akane was a fake account of some evil dude who was supposedly harassing him and the title's other yuri shippers. Without going into details and spoilers, it eventually got to the point where he started attacking the translators of straight douji from the show, even if they didn't include those two girls, and also translated the fan anthologies available at the time, intentionally excluding all the "straight" chapters to prove that the franchise was purely yuri. Eventually, to stop this harassment, the moderators simply banned discussion of it.
I've been on the internet for over 15-20 years now, so I'm used to weird or overly obsessive people, but sometimes people or things they do are so weird or outrageous that I forget about everything and start investing in it when I shouldn't.
