From what I understood from the early chapter discussion threads, it has always been 2000 years, but it was (somewhat) consistently mistranslated.

Edit: I went back to the RAWs and here's an example from chapter 1, page 15:

It clearly says ２千年間 => 2 sennenkan => a period of 2000 years

It might be one of those titles that's really cool in Japanese, but the translation is too blunt to have the same effect.

最恐の悪魔 (not to be confused with 最強の悪魔) => Saikyou no Akuma.

But for a lot of that he probably wasn't the strongest around, he just survived the longest because the actual strongest ones got too ahead of themselves and were eviscerated by the two gods.
