He is carrying a heavy burden in his heart, obviously Walder didn't say anything with resentment, but in his own grief he forgot his friend last words... but considering what the dragon said about the curse, it isn't really his fault, it is a mental trap, it is already impressive he is alive, much more that he didn't already go mad.

Like all histories, the old had not taught enough younglings about their cultures and legacies, but instead, they filled the younglings with enough wrong set of how one should act.
It ended up with the young embracing the worst aspect of what they should not, harming the next and future generation until they are gone or the worst ones came to realization that what they had done.
The fine line of what the future generation should or should not be taught, in hopes that the next one will prosper before or after they pass on.
