ok, seeing all these reactions to the girl's attitude, i'll try to be a devil advocate or some sort. so buckle up for a long-ish explanation
disclaimer first: even i think that the interaction is cliche, especially the end of the chapter. still gonna say that the girl's actions is understandable tho, immature sure
1. BEING A VASSAL
(
helpful ref here! )
long story short, being a vassal is not like applying to goddamn mcdonalds. IT'S A LIFETIME SERVICE, SWEARING YOUR LOYALTY AND LIFE TO YOUR LORD
compare it to a knight's oath. CUZ IT FUCKING HAS AN OATH
it's called 'oath of fealty' and here's a shortened (by yours truly) passage on it from the link above since there's high chance no one's gonna click on it:
Vassals in the Middle Ages took an oath to their Master that ensured their life-long service. This is the Oath of Fealty. The word “fealty” means fidelity and is symbolic of the fidelity that a vassal owed his lord.
The Oath of Fealty:
“I promise on my faith that I will in the future be faithful to the lord, never cause him harm and will observe my homage to him completely against all persons in good faith and without deceit.“
Vassals took the Oath of Fealty during a commendation ceremony. It's comprised of two parts, one of which was the Oath of Fealty. The second part of the ceremony involves the lord promising to always protect the vassal, while the vassal promising to fight for the lord’s command. After the ceremony, the vassal and lord were officially in a feudal relationship. They now had to follow the agreed-upon mutual obligations made with one another.
so, a kid from out of nowhere comes in to your life. saying 'hey man i want you to be my personal protector for the rest of your life and it's a pretty good deal for you cuz with it you can eat and be rich and be happy yay~'. in an outer perspective, it looks like a naive kid looking for someone to play with, so her refusing? uh understandable
2. GIRL' S SPEECH THING
ok, yeah preachy. but it's ok??? the girl is bitter and when she saw the gall of this random sheltered noble, saying hey i can improve your life cuz im very kind and would make this world a kinder place!!!, the girl has the right to be skeptic and resentful
@Rayster also brought up a good point about her low ambition, which may translate that she already resigned herself to her situation. with the random plot device kids she's taking care of, they are probably the only reason for her living. and with their young ages and her normal distrust on adults? no way is she gonna abandon them to live with some noble
one good point too is that SHE'S ONLY 11. so expect some impulsive actions (which i think the preach thingy is) and stupid decisions. i also imagine that she has a whole lot of pride in her independence, y'know being audacious enough to steal from nobles and being the acting role model or maybe even a parent for a lot of kids. following that kind of thinking, it's natural enough to be spiteful to sheltered kids that has everything they need and doesn't need to learn the shit she needs to learn (so yea her judging ars, how could she not?)
(the only problem that i have is ars cuz what the fuck man? at least negotiate sheesh and don't go jumping to people my god. though it may be reasoned that since he's a kid physically, it has an effect on personality and funky brain chemicals but when did mangas pay attention to that??)
