As I understand it, they still are going to lose their humanity as Euphie will become a Spirit and Anis a Dragon, but they will still be together even then.

Yep - part of the reason this is happening is because while Anis could just become queen, go "fuck you nobility I'm changing the laws of this country so suck it" - because she has no magic, the nobility have no reason to recognize her authority on her own and would block any attempt at reforms she attempted.
But Anis going Full Tyrant to get done what she believes will be best, just invites potential/likely civil war against the nobility who have a monopoly on magic and force in the kingdom, and it would devastate the region and countless people of the Commoner/everyday class would suffer and die.
Plus. it would create a weakened state that risks invasion from opportunistic neighbors.
Just a bad situation all around. It's not great, but the answer was either Anis marries a noble becoming an unhappy Queen, or this fight happens with Euphie doing the Contract to circumvent usual Crown tradition and become King herself, and use her extra authority of being a Spirit herself to beat the nobility at their own Magic game, and from a superior position.

right - it all hinges on Anis also gaining special immortal status. If it were only Euphie, it would be a "sad ending" because while Anis is free of her self-imposed godsawful life, her lover becomes an immortal monster and would one day forget Anis ever existed long after Anis died. I think it would at least mean the stakes here are real, and a well-written 'tragic ending' can still be good, if bittersweet. Having Anis also get surprise immortality, in a sense kinda removes the stakes of this whole fight arc, in my mind - but I also won't scoff at an ending that sees them get to be happy together forever, however that arises, so.
Also going full Tyrant That Knows Best was literally Algard's plan. The story already explained why that was a bad idea.

Because ultimately Anis would either relegate her lot to a miserable existence, and if she tried to force a change on the kingdom in terms of power structure as herself, she'd have to actually fight the nobility which would have disastrous consequences for all the people of the kingdom she so loves.
It's honestly well-written and imposes real stakes on their choices and decisions and ideals, and doesn't just handwave a nonsensical happy ending where everyone just goes "oh you're right Anis, actually your way is best, how could we not see it", so I am glad that it's not all just hamfisted sunshine and daisies.
Just feel bad for Anis being given such a bad hand the whole way through. She made some questionable choices herself along the way, but. Without accounting for spoilers from the LN, maybe she can have her happy ending eventually (and hopefully the manga gets there, too).

In the novels, there's a particular event that solves this issue:
After Euphie becomes a Spirit Contractor and basically becomes immortal. The issue of her outliving Anis worries her. But this is solved through a very difficult battle against a powerful vampire. In that battle Anis is bitten and is turning into a vampire, Euphie is desperately trying to save Anis from being turned. This forces them to rely on the dragon mark and creating a dragon magicite inside Anis. They succeed in this. The magicite in question has both Dragon and Vampire traits, what they are are a bit unknown. One of the effects is that now Anis has a dragon's long life. Which solves the issue.
However the next issue they need to deal with is that since both Euphie and Anis have basically stopped being human. Their interactions with humans have now gotten complicated. The changes to them have nearly caused them to act out. In Euphie's case, one idiot had insulted Anis in front of her and Euphie almost killed him in response. Anis at one point thought about destroying people outright, just like how a dragon would think. The two are being influenced by their nonhuman status and is an ongoing issue as of the current western release of the light novels.

Because as a Spirit Contractor she has no need to eat or sleep in general. And Euphie begins to think nothing of humans outside of the ones she is close with.
Anis is in a similar position, she's still disliked by a number of the nobles. Some believe they can defeat her since she's still can't use magic. However due to her new status a kind of dragon vampire hybrid, we're still not sure how much of the vampire part is there, Anis's mindset now has been affected into thinking like a dragon. Interesting implications from the LNs, and I guess if nothing else I'm glad the author is really thinking through the consequences of the actions of Euphie and Anis, as established by other characters and events/lore of the world found previously in the plot and story.
The fact that such consequences occur, greatly elevates my opinion of how this current arc has played out, I admit, and depending on how it all shapes up, I could see a great ending that doesn't feel contrived and forced to allow the main pair to be happy at the cost of the quality of the setting and narrative.

This actually makes a lot of sense now.
Euphie as a queen will keep the nobles in check while Anis literally revolutionize the country making nobles and commoners equal in power. This way nobody can harass Anis becasue she is under Euphie's protection and Euphie herself cannot be deposed due to how OP she is as a spirit.
That is very selfless act of Euphie's part giving that by the near end Anis is still being mortal human and she was in real danger in seeing her die of old age. Good thing for that dragon/vampire curse.

This bothers me a bit, because it feels like a "win the fight but lose in a cutscene" situations. Realistically, Anise should have won, but because the script called for her to lose, the had to make up an oddball reason for it. This just doesn't feel like a believable outcome.

Thanks for that info, I had no idea as I only saw 7 volumes listed.
But I am glad in which way the story goes and that now they had to fight against their decisions, which is putting quite the pressure on them. It's nice seeing that only two choices that they have is either becoming a copy of God Emperor of Mankind from 40k (as in ruling Humanity forever) or just choosing random successors and bailing out.
In this case, honestly, I think that they cannot really bail out. Even if they name those who will succeed them they are still immortal. Sooner or later they will be found and asked to rule again or some crisis will happen that will call for their involvement just like previous kind daughter helped them.

In general the story has basically been in
They're trying to solve issues as they come up or trying to think of how to implement solutions that will change the kingdom but also make sure it's a gradual change, instead of forcing it. Even then some issues will still take long periods of time for change to happen, or are still imperfect solutions.
Like for example, Anis's relationship with the Magic Association had to be mended or else there be repeat issues. They had to mend her relationship with them and find some way to show that the two sides are in cooperation rather than being opposed to each other. This starts to address the issue of what mages roles will be in the future once magicology becomes more widespread. Mage roles in this setting are basically similar to being like the go to defenders as nobility is like the only group that can use magic. So one of the possible future roles for nobility is being like these kind of "spirit" musicians, the concept comes from creating a magic tool in the form of an instrument that when playing music would let people see spirits as spirits aren't usually seen. Even though they made successful prototypes and the concert that came after was a success. There were a lot of issues. The venue had to be like completely dark so people can see spirits when they appeared, the success rate wasn't that great. There were a lot of kinks to be ironed out. And even though this didn't completely solve the issues of her magicology still being viewed as a kind of threat to the nobles way of life. It was a start.
Yes there is doubt the two can truly leave the kingdom cause of either new threats or issues such as international implications of Anis's magicology spreading. Just the Empire being added in volumes 9 and on just adds more complexity.
The current king and queen had abdicated their seats for Euphie right after this duel between Anis and Euphie. With Euphie's victory, they adopted her, named her the next queen and then coronated her in short succession. It went smoothly mainly cause practically all the nobility loved the fact that a Spirit Contractor is now their queen instead of Anis. If they had kept the course with forcing Anis to be queen, the general course of events was to squash her magicology development, make Anis marry some random noble son, continue the bloodline and basically that noble son's family would basically get great influence, she was basically almost made into a puppet ruler. But now we got the issue of there being a faction of nobles that want their god queen to stay forever and rule them just like the last time they had a Spirit Contractor as a ruler. Just the human successor that would later take on the role of next ruler is a complicated process. And combined that with the effects of being a Spirit Contractor cause Euphie to basically start thinking less of humans in general outside the ones she is close with. Even if they wanted to leave now cause of how their nonhuman status is affecting their mindsets and there are so many future implications with this.
Euphie has started to become apathetic towards humans unless they do anything towards Anis. She basically acts unconsciously which causes her to realize her issues. And she because she's doing things like not eating and sleeping for periods of time, she's slowly heading towards becoming a great spirit herself. The only one anchoring her is Anis.
And Anis being influenced by the dragon part, thinking that at any point she could just destroy all her haters, but she's keeping that in check by her own logic to prevent her from acting on it. She basically admitted at one point she wanted to basically just destroy everyone who did her wrong but she's keeping herself from doing that by just using her own logic. It's a difficult situation for them as they are struggling to keep themselves in check.
Now we add in international politics and those issues into the mix started with volume 9. What can happen if people outside the kingdom know how magicology works, how that can develop. We already have an example of her mana blades having a clear advantage against normal weaponry. In the latest western release of the LN, they just developed creating magic weapons using monster magicite and creating specialized weaponry. Like a sword that fires wind blades, or a sword that envelops the blade with flames increase its destructive power. etc etc. Just imagine what would happen if another party understood the workings of Anis's magicology and used that for weapons development. War would evolve so drastically as a result. Right now they are keeping all the secrets inside the kingdom and in a specialized city, but eventually the magicology will get spread. The current temporary solution is to keep it in the kingdom and not spread it yet but considering things like spies and such. The magicology won't stay secret for long.
I can see this series probably lasting a number of more volumes after this.

Why do you think Anis should have won? She's good, but so is Euphie. "Genius young lady" is Euphie.
Besides, I think she cheated -- I think Euphie's "combine, become" was her becoming a spirit contractor right in the middle of the battle. Thus the panel-cut to Lumi.

I hate how they decided to rush the ending of the animated adaptation,they should've taken two or three more episodes to cover this fight as it's meant to be,as shown here.

1. Use magicology knowledge to create weapons of war and arm legions of soldiers with them.
2. Unleash them in a Great Crusade to unite all of Mankind under one banner.
3. Once united take the defeated rulers of each county and form a government around them.
4. Enforce new and just laws across all of realm and force the various nations and rulers to work together and integrate more so that any future war/conflict should be impossible (aka EU today).
5. After some 100 years has passed leave the kids to manage themselves and enjoy in yuri heaven.
6. Check occasionally after every 100 years just to make sure they behave.
I can see this work as Anis is reincarnated after all and unlike everyone else in that world knows the concept of UN and how modern governments work and can put that in practice in this new world.
