The depiction of the goblin is certainly unusual because of how well it is dressed. It makes it seem intelligent and capable of communication. I wonder what the status of monsters are in this world compared to other creatures and why humans wouldn't attempt to establish relationships with the smarter monsters. In the case of goblins, would it be because most of them are barbarians?
That said, the goblin didn't flee upon noticing them but instead attacked them even though they outnumbered him. It's an odd reaction as a wild beast that feels outmatched would simply flee. Perhaps in this case, it was its intelligence in realizing that even if he had fled the humans would send a search party to hunt him down that compelled him to fight in unfavourable odds. Even if he had managed to eliminate them, a search party would have been sent to investigate their disappearance though. In the end, the goblin's decision to attack instead of making any attempt to show it means no ill will simply confirms the human's bias against goblin type monsters as pests to be eliminated.
