@MrFunPlace you seem to have forgotten these two are meeting not as a King and His Subject but as prospective spouses. Even with all the weight of his title/position, the role she’s expected to (privately) audition for is that of a ruling partner.
Flouting her defining characteristics to flatter the King w aesthetics he obviously doesn’t even care for would be illogical & OOC. It’s a lil much to see her prevarications/misdirections as lèse majesté. She was already plenty welcoming/respectful/presentable w/o primping or clinging.
...Unless you expect their relationship dynamics to mirror those of a leader & their subordinate? Which. Uh. Rlly hope that’s not where this is going.

I'm glad the King realized who Feria was. And I'm happy he enjoyed his time there - and Feria seems like she was fine with it, as well. And her blush at the end - I think the King has moved her heart at least a little bit 🙃
Now... the knights said it was a 'nightly visit', which means... RUMOURS! AND ALL THE OTHER CANDIDATES COMING TO HARASS HER! SPY ON HER! RIDICULE HER! RUMOOOOOOURS!
Although, now that I think of it, do the candidates know they have to conduct themselves in an acceptable manner or they're axed from the selection process? I don't think so. Will they be reigned in? Who knoooooows. The ones in the catfight earlier were told to refrain from such things, but... oh, well, we'll see.

by respect, I don't mean respect to a king from a subject but respect from a person to a person. Like when you are going on a date with someone. Don't you dress nicely? Even though you want them to like you the way you are, for the first few meetings at least don't you think it is appropriate to pay attention to the way you dress. It is showing that you care about where this meeting is going.
There are other examples, you are invited to a casual barbeque party in your neighbor house. you met that neighbor almost every day. they might already see you in your ugliest, most outrageous state. Even so, don't you go with nice clean clothes and maybe bring something to contribute to the party? That means you respect your neighbor.
I am not saying she should put him on a pedestal and try her best to flatter him. Just be honest and tell the king who she is. Also, didn't she also in your words "Flouting her defining characteristics" by giving her homemade food, pour him tea and all. It is just that she did that without saying who she is. It makes him think she is a servant. That is the part that I don't like.
Like I said before, the king also has asked: "where is the consort?" and she didn't answer. So, go back to dating. A blind date come up to you and asked "I am supposed to meet ohkimch in this seat, do you know where she/he is? or did you see her/him?" and you didn't say that it is you but continued to talk to that person anyway. To me, that is disrespectful.

This chapter feels forced? Like the author wants to show that the King is smart and appreciates simple things, while Feria knows she's a simple person from a simple background and is satisfied with her current lifestyle.

I wonder how long to disrespect will continue in till the king catches wind and puts the thots in their place; the trashcan. If he's smart enough to figure out her identity so quickly, he at least has to figure out that she's been abandoned because some old bitch is an old bitch.
