Because there are clear parallels between Zoe & Pope, and Garland & Akira. We see that while both are being used by parental figures and have warped perspectives of reality (people in particular), Zoe has an active desire to be her own person and no longer be coddled due to a mix of Lucas' influence as well as knowing she's not vulnerable to anyone (perhaps it can also be that her mind is being influenced by her adult body, a la container shaping the mind and soul), whereas Garland is an actual child who needs protection and guidance, and while she isn't entirely on board with the way Akira does and sees things, can't help but go with the flow either to preserve her own sanity. She even makes a friend with the Facsimile, who parallels Lucas in that he too has a power that essentially controls others and imposes his will upon them, even if they're all based on his mindset at time of creation, but because he lacks courage and sociability (not that Lucas isn't anti-social and self-centered at the beginning, but at least he also doesn't lack in speaking his mind) he wasn't able to connect with her sooner nor really do more than nudge her out of her comfort zone just slightly.Ah I see. So the reason Lucas can not escape the battlefield is because he's choosing to stay and kill Garland but without a doubt will change his mind in the end and save the Garland instead. Thus, Lucas makes an enemy of both sides and can not escape. Ever since I see the Garland being just a little girl, I know there will be some switching sides happen.
I'm also surprised the Pope didn't ask Poppy to assassinate Udo. Her power and personality are suitable for that role. The rest of the Rami team all favor Lucas now except for Poppy and Oscar
As an aside, it was also interesting to see Oscar leave after the initial toast and drinking, seeing as he wasn't there for the board games or the slumber party. Seems they were playing some game based on the towers, judging by that piece they showed.
