@Dogalicious Maybe it's because Yamada is so physically mature that you made this mistake, but yeah, they are all silly, childish, naive middle schoolers. If this was a classroom of high schoolers, it'd be conversely weird how few of them have love experience. They're in their second year of Japanese middle school, which is the same as the last year of middle school in American schools.

By the way, "second year middle school" aka "chuugaku ninensei" aka "chuu-ni" is also the basis of the word "chuunibyou" which refers to how kids like Ichikawa have silly delusions in their second year of middle school, like about how they're a dangerous guy with the mind of a killer (because serial killers are "cool"). It's part of how kids their age try to find their own identity.

@Suzushiiro I don't think Serina caught on, unless I missed something. Moeka is just good at noticing things like this, way more so than most middle school second year girls (this was also true back when she knew immediately that Pick-Up Pai just wanted Yamada when he invited Kobayashi out). I agree that Kobayashi is a bit oblivious/childish, but don't think that Serina is much better fundamentally.

P.S. If anyone is having trouble remembering the girls' names, check chapter 33 page 18, I have it saved on my hard drive for reference.

@MangaMonger The big tell that Nyaa knows is chapter 44, when she gives a side-eye that screams "who the hell does she think she's fooling" when Yamada's setting up the Christmas Eve date. Her face in the scene at the start of chapter 33 where Yamada responds to Moe's fantasies of swapping jerseys with a boifwi is "but you couldn't do that if you were in the same class" also implies that she caught Yamada's slip-up.

She's certainly not as observant/interested in the whole thing as Moe is, but the vibe I get overall from her is that she's picked up on what's going on between the two dorks and her feeling on it is somewhere between "indifferent" and "romance is cringe." Girl would absolutely be first in line to end his life if he broke her heart or otherwise did her dirty, though. Which will never happen, of course, but I could see a future chapter where she gets the mistaken impression that he did something bad to her and confront him about it with clear intent to kick his shit in before the misunderstanding is cleared up.

@Suzushiiro Interesting perspective. I just took a look at Serina's expressions on these pages (ch 33 p 3 and ch 44 p 7) and I didn't read into them as much as you. In one, Yamada says something the girls find silly (the idea of dating a boy in their class) so Serina giving Yamada an odd glance makes sense; in the other, Yamada is off talking to Ichikawa without Serina knowing why, so her giving Yamada an odd glance also makes sense. In the case of ch 44, in the next panel Yamada even says "Go on ahead" so they might have been waiting for her to come over to them so they could walk home together, which would also explain Serina giving Yamada a glance. And it's worth mentioning that Moeka's expression doesn't stand out in either of these cases. I'm pretty sure that Moeka didn't even know in chapter 33, or she wouldn't have made that comment about how there's no way they could date a boy in their class. Anyway, the way you describe Serina's personality sounds cute, but... hmm, I personally feel like Serina has by far the least developed character among the girls, so I didn't pick up on any of that.

@MangaMonger Moe absolutely knows by 33- she's being sarcastic there because Yamada's completely oblivious to the degree to which she gave the game away by responding to Moe's fantasy about a thing she'd do with a boifwi by wondering how that would work if you were in the same class (keeping in mind that among other evidence Ichi's the only guy in their class that Yamada regularly talks to.) It goes over Chii's head which is why her expression doesn't change, but Moe and Nyaa definitely pick up on it. Also there's a panel of complete silence that zooms out to include Ichi in the shot after that and while it's ambiguous due to the angle I'm pretty sure Moe's looking right at Ichi when she says that line in the following panel.

I think Moe and probably also Nyaa were at least pretty sure about what the deal was after the school trip arc where Yamada actively lobbied to get Ichi into their group and then spent the entire trip joined at the hip with him to the point where they got separated from the rest of the group. And Moe's suspicions were definitely confirmed in 31 when Yamada agreed to her "get every guy's LINE" plan and then made a beeline for Ichi. It's probable that her real motive there was getting a feel for what was going on between the two dorks, especially considering that Yamada, who seems to default to walling up and keeping her distance from guys (frequently with the other girls' help,) would almost certainly have rejected Moe's idea if there wasn't a particular guy whose LINE she wanted an excuse to get.

In general I would say it's better to err on the side of assuming that things like that are a sign that They Know rather than just some random detail, both for the "meta" reason of "if we weren't supposed to interpret it that way it probably wouldn't be there" and because the two dorks are easy to read and Yamada in particular is clueless about how obvious she's being about it. Case in point being Onee-chan, who puts together that Ichi has a crush on Yamada immediately after discovering that she exists and for all intents and purposes figures out that Yamada feels the same way the moment she sees her waiting for him at the shrine. And remember, Moe says that Ichi's like an open book regarding his feelings for Yamada in 53, and there's no way Yamada isn't at least as easy for Moe (and Nyaa) to read as Ichi.

@Suzushiiro Oh, you sure had a different perspective on those scenes than me. I looked back through them all, even reread 31 carefully, but in pretty much every single situation, I don't read into it like you did. Like, it's not sarcastic it's just literal, Kobayashi just has a blank face because she doesn't have strong opinions about particular boys, and there's no reason to be super-suspicious immediately of Yamada being moderately friendly with a quiet and solitary boy in their class... In sum, you and I just have different common senses when it comes to what we read in these characters' word choices, expressions, etc.

In particular, for the entirety of chapter 31, the more I look at everything Moeka says and does, the more I personally feel like there's no chance she knows about Yamada and Ichikawa back then, unless her every word and action is motivated by some bizarre secret sarcasm and disregard for their feelings. I think she really only wanted to "get all the boys' lines" and figured that Yamada went for Ichikawa first because he's not busy and he's close by. I'm kind of curious whether, when you first read 31, you really thought "oh, she definitely knows, and this is all sarcasm", or whether it just seemed odd in retrospect.

Oh no, She gonna destroy Moeko for acting too close. At this point the other friends should already know their relationship by now right?

Such a blessed chapter. Better than a confession, although I guess it was a confession of sorts.
One that Yamada seems to have seen leading to the other sort, prompting her to put a quick stop to it. There's a time and place, and at the shoe lockers when you're almost late ain't it.

Oh boy I've been rereading this chapter for quite a while now because I am once dense person.
I took it as him trying to tell her that she is the reason that he's found joy in being at school again, but she interjects because to her, that is not the case. He's walled himself off after failing his entrance exam and loosing touch with his 2 friends, he then decided that this experience was to painfull and walled his heart off so that he wouldn't get hurt like that again. He used his gloomy persona as a wall to keep people at bay. But what yamada is trying to convey that even though she may have done a lot, he also didn't give up because he still went to school after all. Deep down he had never given up... he just needed someone to meet him halfway which is what she did.
I love that you can see the wall crumbling by him dropping the book to embrace her as well and finally really grasp for her too. Eugh my heart can't take this! This is just so pure!!!
