Never understand why mangas need to make stuff so convoluted like making him a noble of a frontier house and you will be done but I know already why it is not done like that. It is that the author can get our MC to come back and add drama in the future because the original dukedom will need him or something...

I kinda like it, at least when they do something interesting with the character's perspective from what they were before going to the fields

depend on type of government, laws and culture. Religion and state are inseparable in the distant past.

Closest example is when a pope excommunicate a ruling nobles, royals and/or heirs. It is a big deal back especially before the reformation. Another example is the British law "Act of Settlement" that forbid Roman Catholic from holding the crown and have to maintain the Church of England and the Church of Scotland.

Even outside Europe this is the case in varying degree.

The mc here opposed the state god's authority and there might be some law akin to the "Act of Settlement" where the nobles have to adhere to the gods and maintain the faith .

I'm currently reading the novel, and from what I can tell he's not just a duke but the head of an independent dukedom. They deposed a head of state and installed a theocracy.
