People are equating the pace quickening to be looming signs of the axe, but it might not be that far yet. It could be "readership is falling, we need to get people engaged again or the axe will enter the conversation." so the author decided to warp speed through all the setup to get things to the beginnings of the first major story arc.

It's not quite to the point of looking over your shoulder for the axe, but it's definitely at the point of seeing that the axe has your city listed on its social media locations.

So they suddenly introduced some demon sympathizer to conveniently die to Gudal's sword and revive an evil god. She could be the mage that Aina replaced, and that makes it even more of a convenience. But has she been, like stalking the sword all this time waiting for a chance? Nevermind that she was following some guy on a horse fleeing from a battle. It's so contrived.

I suppose if he didn't get chewed that means he's still alive then? When this new super threat is defeated he'll somehow be released?
