I was taking it seriously until Weezer popped up.

I don't rly follow music but are they/he(?) that bad? I wouldn't be surprised if some musicians considered 'cringey' in america would be popular in Japan if it's just not the mangaka really 'into' western music or so (wonder if JP has an equivalent of Weird Al. prolly not content wise b/c of how strict copyright is lol)

i don't know shit about rock, i think the last rock? band i listened to was the wrecks and i only knew them b/c they appeared on a youtuber's channel i used to watch lol

They are not generally "bad" per se, they're rather good, honestly. It's more like a meme because Weezer as a band do not take themselves very seriously, Weezer has made their name as a meme band because the music they used to make was considered "geeky music" that were written for virgin losers. This was back in 1990s, the "Pinkerton" album is the biggest example of it, which went to an entirely different way from the "Blue Album" which was considered "Goofy and funny". Can't ignore that Weezer also have a history of presenting themselves comedically, they've made weird YouTube videos to doing Fortnite Map. So yeah, they have a history of being susceptible to internet memes, hence the reason they became one. The problem started when newer fans came onto the scene and couldn't catch that the "hate" was just sake for fun and they started hating on them too and now there's a lot of actual hate present against Weezer.

LOL well, I can see that also part of the appeal to ppl (other than some 'controversy' of rock stars hooking up with fans and such), considering stuff like "Manzai" is popular in japan and other things, so i imagine some ppl would just like the sound without knowing anything about the ppl behind it before all the parasocialism started. tho i'm sure there are interesting vids out there of ppl going to concerts in JP and a handful of american/european bands as guests alongside jpop ppl

Although outside of like Queen/Freddy Mercury i wonder how many openly gay/lesbian musicians the MCs would know/talk about

A movie huh, yeah I can see that being fitting, though the movie would've to diverge from the manga imo considering the shorter format and a disjointed feeling of will-they/won't they towards the latter parts so far.
Also I don't think I've listened to any of the bands mentioned in the comic soundtrack, like I've heard about them but my tastes are more metal than rock, but I do relate with the two MCs' sense of untimeliness in their music tastes.

Considering this manga started as a twitter project it's incredible to see this, regardless of peoples opinions on the track listing.
I'm happy for the mangaka that they managed to help make something like this a reality.

Thanks for the translation! I bought the CD when I was in Japan last summer -- they ended up doing a recall since the Walk This Way version was the one with Run DMC, lol. I don't even have a CD player so I've never actually listened to it.. the vinyl was for sale for $65 at Kinokuniya and I was half tempted but couldn't convince myself to spend that much on something I already have. I could at least listen to that!
