I wonder, did the King and Duke actually fix the problems with the country in the 10 years that sacrificing Scarlet bought them? Or is their country in no better position than it was in back then, with an incompetent Crown Prince, a traitorous Crown Princess, a government riddled with moles, and a society infiltrated by saboteurs and criminals, and so they sacrificed Scarlet’s life just to extend their own, and wasted the time she had bought them by wallowing in self-pity over their own incompetence?
Interesting point. Yeah if they've had no countermeasures in place after two girls has to be sacrificed to save the country, they should just sudoku themselves.

Slapping a Duke is uncomfortably close to treason too, Conny. Did you know that? Man, I love this series so much.

I mean, we saw that they had figured out Faris’ plan 10 years ago, realized that they had no moves open to them except to sacrifice Scarlet, which would mess up the plan.

Then what happened?
The Crown Prince is still incompetent, and is still engaged to the Faris agent that is actively working to bring about their nation’s annexation; except instead of being a member of minor nobility she now wields the office of Crown Princess and all of the power and access that it gives her.
The preparations by their neighbors to carve them up have proceeded; we haven’t seen any indication that the connections between Faris and other nations that are in on the plot have been disrupted or slowed down.
And we have not seen the Republic, which Scarlet’s mother comes from, aid the kingdom. Why should they, anyway? They gifted away one of their daughters, only to see her die, and to add insult to injury, her daughter gets publicly executed and her name dragged through the mud. So, unless I’ve missed the mark, relations with that nation are likely pretty cold right now.
And instead of being able to clamp down on the internal corruption which was being used by Faris, it only got worse.

Maybe I’m missing something, or it will be revealed that the King and the Duke have been setting up effective countermeasures all this time. But for now, it seems like these young ladies have sacrificed their lives to buy time to save their nation, time that these men have squandered whining how miserable they are for having had to make the hard choices that is their JOB and DUTY, when they should have been initiating bloody purges and shadowy assassinations to make those sacrifices count for something.

when the corruption became the system, it's hard for one person to decide to kill everyone under it through it's death

also that possession was expected the second her eyes weren't shown
Yeah. If they wanted really hard to look good. In corruption community the sollution would be a good dictatorship. The corrupted one would bootlick the dictator with fear or without it

To be fair, this is actually pretty realistic take by the author. The trolley problems are IRL usually better solved by preventing them , for example by increasing security around trolley tracks and adding safety measures, also arresting the asshole that keeps tying people to those tracks, instead of simply letting people be sacrificed for the greater good.

Similarly If your country is in such deep shit that you find yourself needing to execute a teenager under false accusation, realistically this one sacrifice won't actually suddenly unfuck your country, and the real necessary work is undoing the whole corruption and decadence of your ruling class, which led to the situation in the first place. Like I wrote previously, they should have enough soft power to engineer postponing the general's execution without having to sacrifice a kid to turn the public opinion, and the fact that they didn't shows how little control they already had left - obviously this won't be easily regained because already entrenched enemy will be fighting against their efforts to improve the situation.

Their incompetence was letting the situation go to the point of considering false charge execution for greater good, just like general that sends bunch of basically kids to the outer walls of capitol as the last ditch effort to slow down the enemy. Even if you can say that such cruel decision was necessary, it means you're already failing and losing, and should have done better before.

Yes, they should have done better before it got to that point.
But it did, and Scarlet's death gave them an extension of 10 years.
So my question is, what did they do with those 10 years that were bought with Scarlet and Lily's sacrifice?
Given the current state of the kingdom, it doesn't seem like they did much of anything.

Was it Scarlet? Or was it Connie who bitchslapped him?
Because they hid the eyes, it’s strongly implying that it’s Scarlet since we’d recognize her sharp glare but I really think it’s Connie here who’s grown confident over the last few months and is royally ticked at what this man did to his daughter. Plus, that’d accomplish the whole “strike down” thing that scarlet promised to do to everyone

Maybe I’m missing something, or it will be revealed that the King and the Duke have been setting up effective countermeasures all this time. Definitely feels like next chapter will focus on what they’ve been doing since the then but given what a Tragic take this story is story is, I expect that the dukes basically gonna break down about how he sacrificed his daughter and gained nothing but a few years from it, during which he’s worked himself half to death and made no progress at all.

that said, scarlet is still missing her memory of the execution so I think her father told her the truth and maybe gave her a chance to escape but she went to her death wit’s dignity and really turned up the villainess act (seriously, go reread chapter 1) just to help sell her execution as justified

That's also my question since it's revealed that they purposefully let Scarlet be executed. They say that they'll strike back against Daegaz, but in addition to what you mentioned, we even learn in this chapter that Daegaz has improved their Jackal's Paradise. Seriously, tf are they doing this past decade?
