The latter is false. "Sentient" means ability to feel, so other animals like Monkeys, Cats, Dogs, etc. would be "sentient."

The word you're looking for is "Sapient," and even then we know that other subsets like Neanderthals and Cro Magons probably were more capable of advanced thought than us to some extent.
