@mar19 The emperor is a good man and a wise ruler, so it would make no sense for the duchess to rule the country. Your questions will be answered in a few chapters, but even if she didn't have an input in the fiancee matter, Eli was the obvious choice (the archduke (Conrad's father) has two sons and is related to the emperor, the Salvatore household only had sons (until Leslie, and they're the only ducal family in the empire) sooo the next option would be the daughter of a marquess or a princess from other country)

No, I read it from the manwha. On chapter 42 the illness and the contract is explained, it would make no sense for the nobles to willingly send their children to be a sacrifice.
The adoption was explained on the first chapters: the duchess went to orphanages looking to adopt a girl, which is the gender of the arabella they'll choose for this year. Again, explained on chapter 42.
I do wish I could read the novel, but I've read spoilers on the novelupdates' forum.

@Lylaz I feel like you’re misunderstanding something. The Salvatores didn’t know that the Arabella would die (because normally people aren’t trying to remove the box, they’re just renewing the seal). They only found out because of the letter that was sent, and even then they weren’t sure whether the Empress Dowager was lying about it. That’s why they’ve been scouring libraries everywhere to try to confirm.

My guess is that Duchess Salvatore was trying to get someone to be Arabella to prevent the Dowager from getting her own person in there to steal the box. But now they know that she’s got a High Priest in her pocket, too (an actual High Priest, not one of the festival nobles). That means that, unless the Salvatores send in an Arabella, both people that go into the inner sanctum will be the Dowager’s lackeys. The complication now is that touching the box will get you infected, which the Duchess didn’t know about before setting Leslie on this path four years ago.

The reason that the Dowager wants the box is basically as a nuclear deterrent. “Do what I say or I’ll unleash CoronæbolAIDS on the world.”

@ZhiShi there is a good reason Leslie is hiding her powers. At the Noble Trial it was revealed that people thought of Darkness and Black magic as a sort of heretical thing, since it rejects Holy power. Plus in Leslie's case, the Darkness is literally formed from the grudges and sorrow of the other children who her birth family sacrificed to gain power and fame. Not exactly something you go around advertising, plus there's really no reason for her to tell everyone she has magical abilities. As the Salvatores probably would have taught her, it's always good to have a hidden weapon up your sleeve, for you never know when it may be needed.

Odd question, but does anyone know what the family tree is like for the Royal Family?

I know Medea was married to previous emperor and that made the current emperor [Fieste] her stepson (even though he’s older than her). She mentioned she wanted her son to become the new ruler, but is she referring to Arlendo in that case (though Fieste called him his son in ch32 which makes me more confused??) or is there another son?

Leslie can literally massacre a bunch of wolves. This chapter is a good reminder of what she's capable of.
Priest, go off and die in a ditch grrrr.

Is nobody going to comment how suspicious and nothing ever done to the High Priest's action?...
Why does he know the location where they end up? He admits to forging evidence.

No. Conrad is good. Do you see this green gem in his arm? He can find Leslie thanks to this thing (Ruenty her 2nd brother give this to him in case Leslie will be in danger and he can't find her). Conrad feel that Leslie has something special but maybe don't know about darkness. But he guessed that Leslie probably did it and therefore tries to hide it from other people. Konrad is such a sweetheart. Even if he does not know what exactly happened, he guesses that Leslie somehow killed the wolves (or she was here when this happened), and guesses that she possesses some unusual powers, he believes in Leslie and tries to help her without letting the information leak. He really cares about her

@SweatyBrie This is a shoujo series, so anything goes for the sake of drama. But then again, the fact the emperor is a total doormat, and a lazy bugger to boot, who doesn't want to hear about anything bothersome kind of explains why corrupt people have so much leeway in the empire.
