As mentioned in this oneshot, snakes are seen as disgusting creatures and therefore people don't want to see Medusa also because they're scared she might turn people to stone. Also shown was Medusa who was just going to the beauty salon to get her hair cut, but the lady of the beauty salon found a tsuchinoko in Medusa's hair and so this appeared on the news, meaning Medusa came into that spotlight where she never appeared.

I can't really explain it better than this.

I don't understand what happened??

As a few others said, a Tsuchinoko is literally just a fat snake. It has some folklore legends but it's not really some super powerful entity.

as for why people are treating it as news:

Tsuchinoko became a national sensation during the 1970’s, when a number of sightings and supposed live captures of tsuchinoko were reported. This sparked a “tsuchinoko boom,” and people all over the country began hunting for tsuchinoko. An explosion of eyewitness accounts, blurry photographs, and talk show specials cemented tsuchinoko as a household term. Since then, it has remained an extremely popular subject among cryptozoologists, with monetary rewards occasionally offered to anyone able to produce a photograph or a physical specimen.

So the closest thing in modern times in the west is Sasquath/Big Foot. Mix that with the fact that this loner medusa is now making headlines, you get a humorous twist of irony, going from society being scared of her to her inevitably being surrounded by crowds and more ogling her rare snek.

And yeah, fun fact: the Gen 2 Pokemon Dunsparse is based on the tsuchinoko. it was really rare to find in Gold/Silver, in one specific area with a 1% encounter rate. And when you find it it's not that good. And they finally evolved him in gen 9 and he turns into... an even fatter snake (but hey he's decent in battle now!).
