The whole point is that it's messy. They're trying to get the ghost to lose her self-loathing by considering what could be instead, and they're all amateurs at it. In short, they need to act as a new family to her and let her consider a future for herself beyond her past, and they don't fully understand that yet but are trying anyways.

It should end with them all being able to move out of the house without lingering regret, and the story's moving along nicely considering the rate at which the ghost's attachment (hair connected to ceiling) are dropping.

Reread from the start of you still don't get it! With such long intervals it's easy to have lost the plot.
