I wonder why she need a damn job to be able to return to university? She do have parents, so I doubt is money related.
A course forcing a student to work? Do they actually exist? While certain courses may have the choice to work with a company as apprentice for the thesis (for example my course had internal thesis or external thesis, external is you getting in a corporate project under contract) these contracts are handled by the university itself not handled by the students (these company are generally in a system where the student can choose from, and this is becouse company need to respect standards (they cannot be exploitative), and becouse the project cannot be under NDA, so there is a need of an initial vetting ).
Alas Japan system may work like this, but this is the first time I saw something similar in a manga. Note not the first time I see students working, clearly, but these were working for economic issues, mostly part time, while this seems present as an absolute requirement to be allowed to study... It also didn't come out while researching the flaws (real and perceived) of the japanese education system (this is totally ridden with issues).
