Although, personally as a guy in a country with less emphasis on politeness I feel like Alya was well within her rights to clap back with something even harsher. That might impact her image and the public perception of her suitability as Student Council President however.

Still though, I feel that glasses-girl here's audacity actually somewhat strains the suspension of disbelief. No way someone supposedly so high up in the student rankings (you need qualifications to run for Student President in any manga), would be so clueless, insensitive and rude as to publicly demand their opponent back down for reasons that boil down to "You're trading sex for success, new girl. Don't you know all the lore??"
Like can you imagine this in real life? I don't think I'd be able to control myself from firing back once I fully wrapped my head around the sheer audacity and ridiculousness.

I think you might've misunderstood what was said in the flashback. Sayaka isn't running, Kuze was just saying that it'd be troublesome if she were based on his prior experience with her. The pairs announced to be running are Alya and Kuze as well as Yuki and Ayano.

Yeah this is one of those schools. And because it is a very prestigious school filled to the brim with gifted students from all range of high society, being able to stand out and get yourself voted as student council president? Doing that says something. Your ability to sway and influence the masses, your ability to speak to and work with people, your ability to manage the various responsibilities that come with representing the student body.

Add on all the hoity toity notions of "tradition" and "pedigree" and being student council president is basically a golden ticket to the "in-crowd" in high society, because a lot of those big shots also served on the student council in their day.
