yea this guy is a fucking loser. always acting jumpy and cowardly around her, low self-esteem MCs are the fucking worst. Worst thing is he wont change how he interacts with her he'll just say sorry for being so lame and cringe ig ur just too good for me and she'll fall in love with this worm.

You are aware of Japanese cultural norms, right? She's older than him, which is already a point of intimidation as age is a huge factor in respect. You see this a lot with "I'm older, so I'll speak comfortably"/"I'm younger, so I can't speak comfortably." On top of that, Japanese has a lot of "leave it to context" shortcuts in language which is why misunderstandings when overhearing a conversation is such a common trope. Her brother probably understood exactly what MC was saying due to sitting directly in front of him and getting the context from his body language, but she only heard the words which sent him into an "oh no, she got the wrong idea" panic and she's got hurt feelings and stormed in and out before he could explain.

This has nothing to do with a "low self-esteem MC" and everything to do with "he's younger and she misunderstood."

there's a difference between "she's older, pretty, and intimidating, and that makes me nervous" and "I have low self-esteem." He hasn't once ragged on himself that I can remember, only talked about how scary, but nice, she can be and how intimidating she is. You know... the premise of the whole manga?

more like "i'm doing something wrong" "i'm being a nuisance to her" "she's older so of course so she's got better things to do besides being here with me/doing x thing for me"
