I don't set that expectation for anyone that isn't a native speaker or JLPT certified (at any level, since it's one of the basic kanji). That goes for even unrepentant weabs, which many of my friends are. That isn't to say they have zero capacity for picking up a word or two here and there, or even something simplistic like その猫ちゃんかわいいね~, but I sure as hell don't expect them to keep "common" terms and phrases straight. That's the translator's job.
