She could have just bought a normal digital camera and then used an online service to get paper photos a few times a year, for example. It would have been cheaper than that kind of instant paper photo thing, plus she could have selected only the best shots to be on paper. In fact even printing at home would likely be cheaper, with an inkjet.

Actually, I think they do have a digital camera, they just also got a digital photo printer, as well. Somebody on the second page of comments noted the camera's a Sony RX100, which, looking it up, uses Sony memory sticks of varying kinds. The next chapter even mentions the memory card capacity.
