They're not afraid to be themselves around him. They're not afraid to cackle like hags around him. This is a family dinner and Goro is family. But, keep Goro's mom away from the cubs. If there is deeper meaning to Yotsuyu's attachment to the pinnacle of evolution, the crab, I think it's to show that she's still looking for people/creatures that are "like her". Before Toda, she did live in complete isolation, and, with her immaturity, quick attachment to superficial similarities isn't a surprising quality to have.
