Honestly this was disgusting. Was this not supposed to be a slice of life romance? Why are we being shown a public execution? Not reading anymore.
Lmao, for several of the previous chapters we have had a reader complaining that the author wouldn't dare to kill off a character on screen, and now we have another complaining because he did. (not even in an especially gory fashion either as he pretty much disintegrated into a puddle)

The duality of man I suppose. Poor Mangaka, damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Is boiling alive a traditional Japanese method of execution or something? It seems like a very strange choice.

It has some history from Sengoku era Japan. Ishikawa Goemon was something of a Robin Hood like figure in Japanese history who was boiled alive publicly by Totoyomi Hideyoshi. https://en.wikipedia.org//wiki/Ishikawa_Goemon

After his execution the tale of Goemon had a sort of martyrdom effect, and his story has been dramatized and exaggerated ever since as a sort of mythical Japanese folklore.

Stalker might have been an exceptional kitsune just judging by the power potential. Apparently nobody present expected him to survive getting dropped into the cauldron and closing the lid. But he did and still tried to kill Goro afterwards. If he wasn't a murderous psycho, he might have become a significant figure among the kitsune.

That was rather more direct than expected, but kudos to the author for providing an illustration of how the fox culture values life and obedience.

Now, someone get the fox goddess a stiff drink or three. :aquadrink:

Thanks for the chapter!

I had been wondering if we would be shown the execution, if Goro would watch it, if Goro would advocate for the criminal, and now I have my answers. We, the audience and Goro get to see the brutality of kitsune life. Goro is clearly effected by it, so we'll see how that effects him and Kogane-san going forward.

lol at the people crying about the execution. This is fox society, folks! It's important Goro knows what he's getting into, marrying into all this. Plus there's a peace of mind in knowing that your would-be murderer is dead for sure.
Boiling his ass alive was not what I was expecting, they're serious about this masquerade shit
Also murder. He tried to murder Goro. We spent several chapters on that arc.

Holy shit. Didn't expect the execution to be shown. I figured they would leave it implied with the notice in last chapter. Had suspicions that Mogami was something special, but I didn't expect her to be Inari-sama.
Either way, rest in piss bozo, let's back to the fluffy romance.

Dude he got boiled alive. Like come on don't tell me you don't see the dissonance. It's a slice of life romance, every chapter so far has been about some dumb shit like the 2 mains getting sick or meeting relatives, and all of the sudden we get to see a character (That is coded as a teen or young adult at most) get fucking executed in front of our main characters? What's gonna happen next? Are we gonna go back to grocery shopping? Are we gonna go back to caring about the little romance between the 2 mains?. That was a fucking horror show.

Sooo... did you just not read chapter 10, or what? Yes, most of the chapters are fluffy feel good romance, but there's been a pretty strong undertone of 'fuck around and find out' when it comes to what Kogane and family are capable of. This didn't come completely out of the blue.

I absolutely think this came out of nowhere, there is a difference between the characters taking something seriously and the tone of the work, the tone had been consistently light hearted so far. nothing even approached this chapter. This shit was tasteless, like something an edgy 14 year old may come up with.

You are free to dislike the developments of the story all you want, but pretending like the backwards nature of Fox and Tanuki society wasn't plot relevant early on is absolutely false. They don't have modern sensibilities regarding criminal behavior because they are a society removed from humankind in general, which is quite literally the entire plot of this manga.

You may also want to avoid opening a history book at any point if you find this minor display of primitive criminal justice too edgy or unrealistic. You might not believe it as barbaric as it seems, but executions were generally public spectacle throughout most of human history up until barely a century ago. People would often gather with their families to watch a person either get hanged, drawn and quartered, or worse.

This is not a history book, it's a manga. You know, a fictional story that can be as edgy as or soft as the author wants. You talk about this thing like it's a fucking documentary about real fox culture and not some basement dweller's hobby project. The story had maintained a very soft tone, the panel you just posted could be seen as a joke. Imagine if in the latest One Piece chapter Luffy fucking mass hanged the current group of baddies Nurenberg style, just like that, I think that people would find that a definite break with the tone that the story had maintained so far.

Lol, are you really using One Piece as an example of a manga with a "positive tone?" One Piece, the manga with Slavery, Torture, Celestial Dragons, Kuma's messed up Backstory, Genocidal Buster Calls, murder, and death? If anything that would be the one manga where it would be thematically correct for Luffy to round up Blackbeard's whole crew and make them walk the plank with seastone lead shoes around their ankles if possible. Possibly not in character, but It would not affect the tone of the story at all.

I don't know what to tell you dude, the fact that you can read One Piece just fine, but will pearl clutch at this manga seems more than a little silly to me. Art is supposed to reflect reality and realistic scenarios to a certain degree otherwise it would not be relatable and would break the reader's Suspension of Disbelief. Like I showed earlier in my previous post the darker elements of Fox society have been present since as early as chapter 9. The fact that you decided to read past that and then act like the author somehow betrayed your expectations of what this manga was supposed to be is wildly absurd. If you that desperately need a feel good story where nothing bad happens to anyone then go find them, as they most definitely exist, but now you know this isn't that kind of story.

Edit: lol it genuinely is the most ironic example you could have used.
