General George S. Patton, at the absolute peak of his popularity and command, was cashiered and sent into back-line duty for pistol whipping a couple soldiers hospitalized with PTSD (they called it battle fatigue back then, but same thing). That was one hell of a lot less than this, and a person at a hell of lot higher position than some grunt platoon leader.
The reason they did so is that a leader like that is a disaster for morale. The brass in Vietnam were a punch of jingoistic idiots drunk on past glory who forgot this fact, and many bad low level officers found a grenade being thrown into their tent. You don't let people like that run loose in your army.
