That said, looking at the actual inspiration, it’s a one-volume book - so I don’t expect it to go too long

nice mix of depressing and cute. (mostly from the art) often the cute stuff really helps people swollow the the sad stuff and makes it hit that much harder in comparsson to a story where everyone is sad and the world and the whole world is nothing but death (with no nice elements). you need to have a little warm light before they snuff it out.

Well I'll give it a chance, but the genderbent element is unnecessary and worrying.
I hope it doesn't make the same mistakes 'Daybreak on Hyperion' did (it had similar premise to this, isekai'd as girl and forced to fight in a fantasy WW2 war). I found genderbending in that series distasteful and ended up dropping it as a result. It was a shame, cause it did cover the horrors of war aspect well.

Then armored vehicles came and made it -500+ meters with only a river/bridge stopping it because of it being a really nice choke point... then came artillery and air support...
