Training to become stronger is already good enough even without a reason for it which is the case of the students. Though Makoto does have a reason to become stronger, he wants to be able to go face-to-face against the Bugess.

Honestly I don't know, I've only heard about it. But I did some research, it's by Hanashi Media, 3 Volumes(out of 18) released this far. There is a digital release, but I don't know about the physical one.

They kinda are already paying off, Makoto is getting ideas on how to get stronger because of them. Like in this instance that he spoke about how one of them would use the remnant mana from a spell to help speed cast a second one.

Spoiler: The answer

Given all the other dragons (except Grount) pretty much were killed by Sofia except Lancer, I would say yes. But to double confirm, Root or Tomoe end up killing most of the others again because they decided to plot against Makoto, so yeah. Shin (The Invincible) is definitely one of the strongest. So Grount and Tomoe are the next two strongest after Root, and they don't fight each other, so the pecking order has never been established.
