Wonder who her friend in the guild is? Aside from the competent stooge party, and they were from that other town originally to boot, I don't recall any characters being adventurers or guild staff. Maybe the receptionist.
Inb4 it's the adventurer-bitch who caused chaos in the pocket world.

There really is little to no point in the overly evil backstory for him. It hasn't come to play since and seemed to just be another hammering of "hyumans are bloody evil even when 'decent' appearing". Could've easily had him be a two faced rutheless business man, without having his backstory be that rutheless. Big difference between shady dealings and hostile take overs and his non-stop killing spree, not to mention the seduction murder frame-job that got his family cursed.

Easily could've had him Scrooge rutheless, but instead we got Flintheart.
I'm also either betting on it being the dead adventurer or it's Toa.

I'm feeling that Rembrandt's backstory was just there to introduce the Assassin's Guild, which constantly appears in the later chapters, whether it was Morris, the girls, their master, or the jackasses that tried to take out Makoto after he humiliated one of them during the teacher exam.

The one who caused that problem was personally killed by Makoto (his first personal murder)

As for the friend, iirc
She's just another merchant's daughter who's serving as receptionist at the guild. Had sorta friendly rivalry with Yuno when they were kids (and still kinda do)
Her family is not doing THAT well atm tho.

That said I don't remember how the idea got passed to her
But similar to how Carol and whatstheirboss's name started doing takeout business from Makoto's casual advice
The friend will ends up being the first 'idol' in Tsige, who start doing live performance as a mean to attract people's attention.

Komoe is defo best daughter.
Shame Lisa is actually a massive bitch, same as rembrant. Feels like the author just kinda wants us to forget the backstory for them after making it so grim
I don't think the author wants us to forget the backstory, per se, but the way the novels are written, the man is clearly seeking his own redemption via helping Kuzunoha. And by the time Kuzunoha realizes that Rembrandt is kind of evil, he's already been targeted by the moral preaching and thus isn't going to turn on the ally that is repaying his debt for the rest of his life.

You could say they actually are redeeming themselves in a certain fashion... whether they would be actually doing so if Kuzunoha had failed to prosper is a good question.

LN Source: I've been reading the official English LN. And I have a few impressions from them:
1. Hibiki is clearly more problematic from the start. In the manga and the anime she's presented pretty benevolently. She's only a little cocksure due to her past life of "no effort success". Vs. the LN there's a flavor of "arrogance of nobility" from the start. Also LN clearly states that she's been given a "Charisma" ability. Manga Hibiki has humility and guilt in failure; I don't think that LN Hibiki does (or at least not much).
2. If feels like the author is familiar with overly aggressive, borderline criminal business behavior from the start -- and takes it as the expected norm. Like she grew up in and worked in such an environment and views it as normal business.

With that in mind, it seems like the manga reduces the ruthlessness somewhat (e.g. with Hibiki) and the anime reduces it much more (by removing Rembrandt's backstory).

Rembrandt hasn't changed AFAICT -- rather he just doesn't need to be as criminally ruthless as he was in the past -- and instead is just "normally" business ruthless. (Well actually, he's still borderline criminally ruthless.)

So, I don't think that he's on any redemption arc, nor does he see any need to be on one. The only reason he treats Makoto well is that Makoto saved his beloved wife and daughters.

Aside from the author's personal views, there's a general difference in Japanese ethos. Western ethos is very much "responsibility/culpability for one's choices" and, very closely related to that, a strong sense of justice. Vs. Japanese seems to have much less personal responsibility, and a seeming cluelessness about what (western) justice is.

Rinnon is cute as always. Komoe too, but that goes without saying.

The backstory was justification for the curse. Rembrandt now is a changed man. Even if he can't erase the past, all Makoto know is the current Rembrandt.

For Tomoe, it's more convenient for her to not expose his past as he's actually being a good mentor to Makoto.
Well if you ignore that Rembrandt would have killed Lime using assassins groomed from the orphanage Lime himself comes from or the time the daughters sent maids to burn down the place where their father comissioned their portraits while sick and maybe I'm missing more

I love how Komoe just keep getting carried around like a puppy.
Also her serious face really does resemble Makoto.

I get that what the Rembrandts did in the past was plain evil, but even tho he and his family is turning on a new leaf in life, people in the comments just can't get over it.

Yeah basically that, now that he is on top he has other means to achieve his goals but if he needs to resort to the same cruelty he used to he won't blink even once

Fun chapter:
  • Komoe going HAM on the kidnappers. We've only seen this hinted indirectly before (the terror of the forest elves of Komoe's training regime).
  • The two sisters (including the less bloodthirsty woodworker) going "torture the malefactors" mode.
  • Even the clumsy alchemist goes torture mode. :D
  • A lot of relationship info various side characters.
  • Looks like Toa know exactly how brutal the two sisters are.
  • Murder-doll Komoe being toted like a teddy bear by Toa.
  • Makoto innocently makes a mistake in the right direction. (Dodged a death right there, Makoto!)
  • And manages to not say "Wow! You really look different from before!"
What's a "Rizou Motif"? I assume that she's referring to the two faced dragon symbol.

Oh he just ruined a man's life (the one in love with the old company owner) blaming him for the death of the old man and stealing his lover, killed that same old man and his daughter, killed an old partner, etc. No biggie. And as I said he is still the same old Rembrandt. Just because he doesn't need to be like how he was in the past doesn't mean he has completely changed

He was hired to sabotage anyone attempting to cure the curse, having bought the grudger's 'lies' (the Truth) regarding why the family was cursed.
The lie was in the extent of the curse, he was told it was a mild curse making them as ugly on the outside as they were on the inside, so you would imagine some pimple curse or something, but the reality was much worse as it was turning them into mindless monsters, wasting away until their very painful deaths.
Edit: in case it wasn't clear, they only lived long enough for Makoto to cure them, because they were being force fed and were only cured in the end because Makoto is a stronger monster, holding them down when their rabies like symptoms had them avoid liquids like the elixir.

Maybe in page 2?

Besides the dialogue between Lime and the shaman back in chp 20something, did the manga show the Rembrandt pasts or is it information from the novel? I'm too lazy to check back and already spent more time that I wanted to find the connection with Lime.
