Well yes, and even though it's pretty nitpicky, but that's different. Susanoo can turn ghostly with conscious effort, but it doesn't act differently by itself depending on how people try to interact with it. It will never turn soft by itself, like this and Limitless can.
Makoto has near limitless mana anyway, so it made sense to use more powerful technique even if it means wasting mana in the process. No point in using little mana if it means getting battered like in his battle against Sofia.
In defense of the anime, after Tomoe and Mio, the next big fight for Makoto to close the first season on is the fight with Sophia. They only had 12 episodes to work with. What is the next big, epic climax in the story? That is the Rotsgard Academy climax with accompanying coming together of plot lines with other characters. That is the best end of the season. That is what they need to get to in 2 cours, or 25 episodes. This story is dense, so it means some parts will have to be excised or streamlined to meet that deadline.
