She said she flew under her mother in chapter three, and also showed credentials, thus compiling over 9000 hours. Which seems indeed strange, if the Gendo don't allow women to fly. "Flew under my mother" was the exact wording of the translation, so was her mother allowed to fly even though Gendo forbids it? Maybe i'm just misunderstanding it. Something still does not match up. Diode is also 18, not 19. Even with ship-jumping, she would have needed to keep a low profile so her name won't show up anywhere, so getting that flight experience while on the run seems strange. It also really felt like it was the first time she was permitted to fly with another girl a ship.

Potentially all of this. She was trying to be less conspicuous and saying she's an experienced pilot who flew under a family member is less conspicuous than "I learned to fly through ship jumping and teaching myself" would be.
