@Granitefish : Personally, as a user of various online message-boards and the like, at best I don't distinguish between some random other user fucking with what I can and can't see and a moderator doing it. At worst, moderators are far worse because the extent to which they can make my experience hell within a localised area is considerably higher, and there is generally no means of preventing them abusing that power. I don't trust anyone who holds any power over me not to abuse it.
And I definitely don't trust "the community" to stop them... not only because "the community" are often too afraid of repercussions to voice any sort of dissent... but because often what gets me the most trouble from mods amounts to being unpopular.

Anyway.... I'll always be wary of moderators the same way I'm wary of police. All it takes is for them to misinterpret something I've said or done and I can expect to suffer for it with no way to defend myself.
