The F-35 might end up being in service as long as the B-52, which may be over 100 years. Human pilots can't be hacked, and can fly without telemetry. You don't consign a VTOL-capable stealthy multi-role fighting aircraft to scrap unless you can't find parts for it anymore.

If we look to the cycle of history, cities typically become perverse and corrupt, and the surviving rural areas are the ones that survive.
F-22/35 or whatever it is implies that the "war" is in reference to the next global civil war between cities and country, between feminine and masculine, the left vs the right.

We may see this war in our time.

I complete forgot that this story technically takes place in the future and thought the "War" meant WWII, so the F-35 coming out of nowhere made me time-travel shenanigans.
