Look, I know it's easy to sympathize with Megumi, but this still is. a horror story. Except he's the victim of it.
Yuu was never perfect, but he was never a bad person either. He was an ordinary man who somehow managed to get married despite having no social skills and the emotional intelligence of a rock.
Both Megumi and Yuu had checked out of the relationship with no attempt to communicate from either of them. Then his wife started cheating on him with a ghost.
Said cheating was draining her life force and she brushed off attempts to get her to seek medical treatment. When that failed he hired an exorcist to help only to get a harsh reality check about the flipside of "cancel culture" when his attempt to "help" only hurt the one he cares about most.
The ghost used it to drive a wedge between them. Not only that but to start treating his body like a toy.
Then Megumi got worse. She locked herself up so she could waste away. (And fuck her ghost lover.) He trusted that she just needed time alone so he respected her privacy and gained a new appreciation for her after he took on cooking and housework.
Then when he found out it all went to shit he tried even harder to lessen her burdens. That's when he found out about the ghost.
Oh also he got sexually assaulted by the HVAC technician he hired after he found mold while cleaning.
Anyways, his wife distanced herself more. They hardly even saw each other. But at least she was getting healthier, getting happier, while leaving the house, right?
Then Yuu found out about her working multiple jobs when doing the laundry. He was happy for her, yet concerned about her keeping it a secret. She wasn’t going to start acting like his mom and buy into spiritual scams, right? Or join a cult? Is falling in love with the ghost who fucked her right next to him while he slept any different?
There was another small time where he got a peak of hope. They learned to appreciate each other more and bonded through praise. He was trying to mend their relationship.
Then she drops the bombshell: She wants a divorce. That ray of hope was only possible because she became bold after she stopped caring about him.
They ended up renewing his passions. He got second thoughts and wasn’t able to keep up. Then the worst part came:
He got raped by her ghostly lover, forced to continue, and realized that she had been using him for his body.
The fan reaction is the dressing on top of his terrifying life. The audience at large doesn’t care about what happens to him because they're cheering on his adulterous wife and her lover.
