a bittersweet ending. I love that no matter how strong the curse was, Anne's actions were strong enough to become memories.

They say a good story can ruin as readily and as deeply as it can nurture, and sometimes it will do the both, in one telling.
This is not a novel premise, but the narrative of Anne, and Laurent, and Marie, and Josette, still resonate with the weight of what it can mean to be human, and the drive to seek and build connections with others, to fight against isolation and the inexorable tide of loss.

And the idea of loss is prevalent throughout--Laurent and Marie lose Josette in one sharp, violent moment of trauma. And then Laurent is made to watch as he loses Marie, piece by piece, moment by moment, to the slow cold cruelty of illness. Two types, two speeds, both world-ending in the sort of grief they can inflict.
At the same time--we have Anne, who is lost to everyone she meets once daybreak hits. And at the same time, she loses the connections she has the fleeting hours of daylight to make, while carrying the weight of one-sided memory, all of the good and the bad and the mundane and the life-changing. Laurent and Marie carry their one-sided memories of Josette, and soon Laurent would carry his own for his family. It's a beautiful mirroring of the idea, even if the story that carries it would break one's heart.

Yet...there's hope, and perseverance in the face of the inevitable, and the quiet strength to push forward and do the work and bear the weight because it matters to someone, even if that someone isn't able to experience it. Anne held the memory of Laurent for eight years, through the trials and struggles and pain she faces having to navigate a world that will never call out to her in recognition. Laurent carries Josette in his mind and heart as he tends to Marie, doing all he can (and much that he cannot) in his attempts to make her comfortable for just a little while longer. It is hard for all three of them, in differing ways, and yet the reasons they continue are arguably at least one core facet of what it means to be human: to find the motes of light and joy in an uncaring universe, and to create meaning and a mark that says "we were here" long after we are gone.

And the magic is that even Anne can accomplish this. Laurent and Marie would never remember her name, but the weight of her resonates through their lives like ripples from a stone on the surface of the water. Even if the moment they were created has been lost, their presence is felt, and the carry forward. In and clean house, in warm, nourishing food, in brilliant flowers on a gravestone and growing vibrant in a garden. And just as Josette gave Anne a chance through Laurent, so too did Anne give Luarent a chance to see that Marie's last days were a little bit brighter.

Laurent and Marie will never remember Anne's name, but Laurent will forever remember Amour-Marie flowers, and the presence of one more point of light in the lives they shared.

That hurts, yes. but it's also beautiful, I think.
