Seems like Haruka lead a rather lonely and isolated life, which is all too common for many of the Japanese salary man. No friends, avoids confrontation, goes with the flow, and keeps himself isolated. Most likely a defensive mechanism to protect himself and prevent himself from getting hurt. This leads to him fearing close, personal connections with others. Even though is already a middle aged man, he has never truly emotionally or socially matured because of this isolation.

Although, he seemed to mellow out with his new party members. He still keeps a wall around them, albiet unconsciously. Al being the honest and straightforward type is especially sensitive to these kinds of barriers. Haruka is scared when he overhears Al's thoughts and seems to recall a previous experience where he had hurt a girl back in school.

TL asked why it was 18 before and now it's 15. Maybe because they are different races?
Some mature sooner, some later. Hopefully also live longer.

Time for Al's insecurities and Haruka's social anxiety to come head to head.

Also, "friends" really is a problem when the age gap is that big. The bodies may all be 15, but Haruka still has a mid-40s old man as a core identity, putting them 30 years ahead of the kids. Parent, guardian, caretaker, mentor (insofar as one with "amnesia" can be such), sure, but "friends" is weird.

Even more so when it's the self-described "single, awkward, otaku, scolded by my superiors, disrespected by my juniors, and stuck in the daily grind", because at that point, you're used to keeping people at arm's length and then some. :aquadrink:
I think this is a bit of a newer cultural thing particularly in the West but it was actually very common for a long time to be friends with people that could be a good bit older or younger than you. Sure, it wasn't with the same expectations that you'd be the same type of friend that people of a same age group would be, but I remember when I was a kid being friends with an older couple. Usually they'd just hang out and enjoy nature at the park that people used, but they were friendly and open to everyone regardless of age.

Now of course you don't treat people of all these different age gaps the same. Hanging out with kids means you need to act differently as the older more mature person. But it was always great to have an older person around to ask questions that as a kid you might not ask a family member or the like. I really think it's a shame how much people look at these sort of interactions these days and become extremely fearful that the friendly people in the community are secretly predators.

Beyond all that though, with how much of Haruka's life was just slogging through things, this might as well be a full reset for him to try out reliving his early adult years lmao

There is no discrepancy, the receptionist said dark elves reach adulthood at 18, not that its the general rule in their society
I don't know man, sometimes I read this the MC acts more like a maiden then an old dude. Which is not a bad thing but considering how much he talk about he being an old man...
Hes just a very sad old dude
I believe this is just how Haruka originally is, I have seen guys who are really passive before. Since she's used to her gender by now + her natural personality, she would indeed seem like a maiden

plus her current body isn't simply appear along with her isekai, the novel imply her body may originally belong to/replicate from a goddess (hence why she's so strong). So the original "habit" may be there, like how she keep stroking her ear in the novel
The mind of a novel reader truly baffles me, its like you people have the compulsive need to throw around spoilers at every opportunity
