Imo, being friends doesn't mean you've to tell everything about yourself, especially things that are in the past you'd like to move on from, that don't have direct impact on the present. A direct analogy would be saying that transgender people have to announce to all of their friends, even ones that they're not that close with, that they used to be the opposite gender.

This isn't about telling everything, this is about telling IMPORTANT info, this is like having a friend that sells you a car but doesn't tell you that someone fucking died in it, not EVERYONE wants to own a car that had a dead body in it

things we know:
Kazusa was much younger than Mino is now when his change happened
Kazusa was abused by his dad during that period of time
Kazusa's mom still isn't over it
Kazusa grew a self-hating complex

I don't think he thought it "would work" I think he doesn't mind it and that was the issue with his parents, and he wants to move away from that trauma.

Feels like Kazusa was into Mao, Mao wasn't into Kazusa either because Kazusa was a girl or because Kazusa had sex change(Probably because Kazusa was a girl).

There were hints that Mao has a thing for Rinko in the earlier chapters so really I think Mao likes girls, and I think that's the issue between Kazusa and Mao too. Mao is simply not into male-Kazusa and that contributes to his self-loathing. It's unclear at what age Kazusa changed but my theory is that either Mao rejected Kazusa at some point when they were younger (after his change) or Kazusa somehow found out Mao likes girls, probably some time during their middle school years.

Mao then learning that Rinko has already has a crush on Kazusa realized she didn't have a chance and went for the "I'll support her as a friend" route. It would've been kinda fucked up for Mao to out Kazusa like that too so it's not too strange for her not to mention anything.
