So, the black box was the original Butao's monologue and the white box was the player's, right? I find some lines confusing.

Okay, so he really did it because it's against the story for her to go with an NPC...
Tbf, it's not that he cares that everything remains 100% accurate to the story, just that it remains close enough to be predictable. He noted in the school festival that there are certain story beats that don't really matter too much one way or another, and the amount of attention is still more in the realm of intrigue in him without him yet being labeled as an actual threat, which is the main thing he aims to look out for (the fact some eyes are on him is also all the more reason to lay low until said intrigue dies down.)

That being said, I don't entirely disagree with you either, there's definitely some major denial he needs to get over regarding his goals for keeping the story on track. At the very least he needs to acknowledge that it's time to start prepping for things to stop following the path he expects them to, though I do think he's right to be aiming to maintain his place in the shadows as much as possible to increase his options 🤔
My issue is that the MC is always half hearted in doing things.
If he wanted the story to be predictable, he should have followed Butao's original actions where he harrased Kaoru and got expelled. I mean that's crucial to the plot, right? But he didn't.

By acting differently, he had already stray from the story. And yet he kept saying it's for the sake of story. He's being hypocrite.

I'm not expecting him to fight the whole school. It seems like he's not even that OP since he couldn't even beat the girl who summoned the demon.

But I hope he stopped using "following the story" to avoid doing something good. That reasoning just doesn't work anymore. Find a better goal.
In the first place, he doesn't even know the whole story since he seemed to not know the events for female protagonist.

Thanks for the update!

I already forgot what the f is happening in this manga, was it ever mentioned why MC is not speed running and pretending to be weak as f? Any other protagonist would have speed run this stuff specially if they already know the story and to do's and dont's.
Yeah honestly. I think a part of it had to do with the broken English translations in earlier chapters

As I said, it's not about keeping things 100% true to the original story, it's about avoiding alterations that cause problematic deviations. Sometimes it's also more about flying under the radar than keeping the story on track. The fact is, the more he does things, the more he sticks out in more ways than one and the harder it becomes to keep things on track just enough for the story to play out the way he knows so that it's easier to prepare for when all hell breaks loose (something he's noted will eventually happen multiple times.) He plays his cards close to his chest and works to keep things in a range of pacing that is easier to work with and prepare for. Like imagine he acts now and creates a domino effect that leads to the war he knows is potentially coming happening months from now instead of within the timeline he knows should happen.

Are there problems with his way of thinking? Sure, you can argue that, but how can you be certain that your ideas of what he should and shouldn't be doing are for the best? Heck, for all we know, things haven't deviated as much from the original story as people think they have because, again, the most important thing is that the main story events play out the way he expects them to, minor changes are inevitable, but those are ripples on the water compared to what he's preparing for, and for those to be predictable he needs specific flags to remain true, not necessarily every flag

oh my god bruh this pacing is fucking glacial. I'm gonna keep complaining about this until it stops because this setting is genuinely quite interesting but mc's actions are so fucking slow and tame that its sucking the energy from the series.

Seems like you misunderstood. I'm not expecting him to do many things and stand out. I agree that he should hide his power.
My issue is with his reasoning, when he kept using "following the story" to do or not do something.

For example, he "saved" Kaoru in this chapter even though he ended up showing his courage to other people. He basically stood out here as there's no reason to "save" Kaoru in they eyes of the other classmates. His reasoning was to keep the original story.

But then he also saved Satsuki during adventurer exam even though that changed the story where she was expelled.

Like does he really want to keep the story or not?
I'm fine with most of his actions. But I find his reasonings inconsistent. Like just admit he wanted to help when he wanted to help.

Btw you said "it's not about keeping things 100% true to the original story, it's about avoiding alterations that cause problematic deviations."
But this is another issue: the manga is really bad at explaining which events should be followed exactly and which ones are optional.
Why is it okay for Butao and Satsuki to be strong and not get expelled?
Why is being friendly with Tenma okay even though she was one of the heroines with a route?

I don't know whether you're novel reader or not. But to me, his goals and motivations aren't clear in the manga.
But well, I also know I'm stupid in literature, though. So, if all you said were based on the manga, maybe you can help me point out the things I'm missing.

You have to remember there's good reason for him needing to play this way. It's not just so he can keep the story on track, but also so that he can avoid the eyes of those that would deem him a threat. The nobles hate things that disrupt the status quo and are too powerful to be underestimated and other players are also potential sources of problems. It's much better to be in a position where he can pull strings from behind the scenes, as he has been, then find himself in a position where his options are limited because of those that harass him if they knew how strong he currently is, especially since he's not likely anywhere near as strong as those that the top yet, and if he is, he'd have to reveal all of his trump cards in the process.
Weird then that other players are showing their strength and seemingly nothing is happening to them.

Other players doing whatever the fuck they like: Good life, living like a king with money, and bitches
Butao trying to lie low: Decent life, being looked down upon, acting like a bitch, sneaking around like a roach, no authority or bitches
Butao's defender: Wow, so stunning and brave

There's been only one player so far that has done anything to reveal their strength, and he's likely to feel some harsh repercussions after this stunt. Prior to this all he did was pander to his superiors, getting in good with them, but now that he's shaking things up like this, he won't likely be in their good graces for much longer.

About that:
So apparently Tsukishima, the blond dude, is about to suffer the consequences of his actions soon enough. So yeah, there's genuine consequences if Butao/MC shows his true strength or anyone in Class E.

Haven't read any of the the novel myself, so this is all based on what I've read in the manga. I think part of what helps on this front is the fact that I'm a more recent reader of the manga, so it's easier to retain and follow along with everything since I haven't been affected by the windows between releases (which might be part of what's hurting the series for you, not sure, I know it affects some.)

It is true that the series hasn't really done much to touch on what is and isn't important to be followed exactly, though that's pretty true of most series with a similar premise that we won't really know about what constitutes a major deviation until the characters note this fact, so the fact I have experience with something similar might be helping me on this front. So far we know that the main party for the game's main character is fairly important, the results of the school festival won't change much and from there it kind of comes down to perspective, like how I imagine associating with Tenma is more of a non-issue because that just affects the romance side of things, and not the main plot (pretty typical for these types of games if you've ever played something like Trails or Persona.) Similarly, Satsuki's situation should be fine since she generally keeps her strength hidden, like Butao does, and so long as she remains on the sidelines since, iirc, she just kind of disappears from the game from that point, so what is one more background character really is the logic (especially since it was considered a necessary change, much like Butao helping his family to get strong so they don't die in what is coming.)

Honestly, it's fair that you find his logic and reasoning to be inconsistent, and you don't even have to fully agree with my analysis, everybody has their own way of thinking about things and viewing the world. The big thing to remember with our MC is just that he too is human. He wants to only view things objectively and in a way that only reflects his self-interest, but, in the end, just like most people, he finds himself betraying his intended logic in favor of his emotions and his self-interest in favor of his empathetic side, which is all very common for someone we have learned tended to spend is life isolated from others, no family, no friends, just him and his games against the world, but, bit by bit, he's being forced to recognize that he is no longer alone, reflecting on the days that he once thought weren't "lonely." (Sorry for this last bit of rambling, I like to psychoanalyze characters like this and pick apart what drives them to do x, y and z cause I find the human mind to be rather fascinating.)

That all being said, do I think this is some phenomenal story that has no flaws? No, definitely not, the criticisms aren't unwarranted and there are aspects of the story that could be better, like I do agree it'd be good to have a bit more clarity on the MCs goals overall, and some of the pacing can be rather awkward. I do think that people are too harsh on it though, and some criticisms just flat out don't make sense (like the early criticism that "no gamer wouldn't spend ages customizing their character," despite the fact that plenty do when they just want to jump straight into a game they're excited about,) but it's all a matter of perspective, and so the best advice I can give in circumstances like this is to turn your perspective around and see if maybe there's some angle that you might have just missed, and if you don't see it, that's okay too, it's something that can take practice and sometimes it's just a sign some things about the story just don't click with you (there are plenty of stories I can't ever resonate with, no matter how hard I try, like how I just don't get why people love The Emince in Shadow so much, even if I look at it from the lens of satire or parody.)

Wow, Butao's actions paid off.
I hope Butao reclaims his body with all the lessons we have and lead the story forward before it happens, like in "The One Within The Villainess"

Honestly I feel like a large portion of the frustration comes when the story setting up A LOT of things for an calamity that is yet to even hint at happening, so it just feels like non-stop scurrying and excuses of why we can't do things.

This tho, I agree with you 100%. Kinda in the opposite end, that story just shows a lot of important plot, and zero of the MC's setup because the MC is an idiot who stumbles into greatness with his every idle act.

Nothing Ever Happens: The Manga

That being said, it still has my attention, but I don't think I can go another arc without some actual action starting to go down.
