Its well known I abhor the yuri and yaoi genres but even I can see how fucked up this shit is. Freedom of expression should always be encouraged and protected so long as it's not a call to violence of course.

A crackdown ensued and at least 30 people were arrested. I think the current news stories are from the aftermath of these arrests.

I linked the news article so first read it, there's nothing misleading about the title when it affects to manhua as a whole (erotica is not the same as porn and it's not only gay one but also straight). The persecution is much harsher on those who wrote boy's love (denmei), and the works are not necessarely new (it's on the article, read).

Firstly, when I was talking about erotica but mentioned it as porn, I was talking from the Chinese government point of view. Let’s read article 367.

"Pornographic articles" mentioned in this Law refers to sex-propagating books or periodicals, films, video- or audio-tapes, pictures or other pornographic articles which concretely describe sexual acts or undisguisedly publicize sex.

Scientific works concerning physiology of human body or medical knowledge shall not be pornographic articles.

Literary or artistic works of artistic value which contain contents of sex shall no been deemed as pornographic articles.

Therefore, erotica is porn in the law. Haitang authors were writing material which had sexual acts in them. Now let’s read article 363.

Whoever produces, duplicates, publishes, trafficking in or disseminates pornographic articles for the purpose of making profits shall be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of not more than three years, criminal detention or public surveillance, and concurrently be sentenced to a fine; if the circumstances are serious, the offender shall be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of not less than three years and not more than ten years, and concurrently be sentenced to a fine; if the circumstances are especially serious, the offender shall be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of not less than ten years or life imprisonment, and concurrently be sentenced to a fine or confiscation of property.

The first paragraph is what the authors got in trouble with. Also in article 364.

Whoever organizes shows of pornographic films or videos or other video- or audio-tapes shall be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of not more than three years, criminal detention or public surveillance, and concurrently be sentenced to a fine; if the circumstances are serious, the offender shall be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of not less than three years and not more than ten years, and concurrently be sentenced to a fine.

I believe they also guilty of the first paragraph. Article 365 isn’t relevant here but might be useful to know.
